Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, carries out duties related to the maintenance, feeding and care of animals according to an established schedule. Assists with tasks related to breeding and sacrifice.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Distributes food to animals in established quantities in accordance with a schedule.
Cleans and disinfects pens and cages; washes drinking and feeding troughs and other accessories.
Cleans, brushes, washes, disinfects and shaves animals.
Immediately informs supervisor of any apparent changes in the animals’ state of health; takes temperatures as necessary.
Assists in the selection of animals for experimental or breeding purposes.
Assists with certain tasks such as: anesthesia of animals, taking blood and stool samples, cross-breeding, castration, injections of vitamins or medications, slaughter and cutting up of animals.
Weighs animals and food. Carries out euthanasia of certain groups of animals according to established procedures.
Receives, stores and delivers food and accessories necessary to the maintenance of animals. As necessary, verifies animals which have been ordered and transports them to the appropriate locations.
Disposes of carcasses and waste according to prescribed procedures. Operates incinerator and ensures its cleanliness.
Performs minor work relating to the construction or repair of cages and feeding troughs, etc.
Takes inventory of animals. Assists in the inventory of supplies and equipment.
Completes standard reports.
Maintains and performs minor repairs of equipment and instruments under area of responsibility. Ensures cleanliness of work area.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry and animal health care. Demonstrated ability to lift and carry items weighing approximately 50 lbs. Experience working with multiple species, any NHP experience would be considered an asset. Demonstrated ability to handle priorities, working efficiently and collaboratively on a tight schedule. Ability to effectively communicate and work collegially within a team. Excellent attention to detail. Knowledge of sanitization procedures. Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate manual records. Proven ability to clearly transmit and receive information. Ability to work alone as well as part of a team. English (spoken and written). French (spoken).
Please note that the position is permanent and full time.
Work Schedule: 35 hours per week: Tuesday to Saturday
*Candidates must be available to work weekends and holidays. The permanent work week schedule will include part of the weekend (Tuesday to Saturday) However, during the training period and pending health screening, the work week schedule will be Monday–Friday for the first 3-6 months*.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #3 on a scale of 0-4.
