The position is responsible for reviewing and analysing the needs of faculty and staff, and developing, with consultation, the overall strategic direction and systems' infrastructures, to enable the planning, implementation and managing of information technology and systems within the Faculty of Forestry.
Reports to the Dean, Faculty of Forestry, through the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies, Faculty of Forestry and the Chair of the Faculty IT advisory committee.
Responsibility for IT within the Faculty of Forestry is jointly held by the systems manager and IT staff in each of the three Departments. Key to the effectiveness of this position is the maintenance of a collaborative working environment with these staff. The successful applicant will represents the Faculty on various University committees. Provides advice and consultation to three academic Departments, two offsite research forests, two research centre's, faculty and staff. Negotiates/arranges contracts with various service providers/suppliers. Supervises professional and support staff and students.
WORK PERFORMED
1. Develops strategic direction, and researches, reviews, analyzes and develops strategic recommendations and plans to the Faculty IT Advisory committee, and the Dean, to meet the short and long term information technology requirements of the Faculty, in order to assist Forestry in obtaining its business objectives.
2. Analyzes requirements of users and provides consultation and technical direction to departments, research forests and centres in the development and modification of systems, databases, networks, hardware, software and laboratory equipment.
3. Mentors and provides team leadership for Forestry IT personnel. Advocates and communicates IT personnel strategies, plans and concerns to the forestry IT advisory committee and Dean.
4. Determines project timelines and staffing, outlines work plans, reviews progress and determines changes/priorities.
5. In consultation with Departmental IT staff, and the Faculty IT Advisory committee, develops, plans, implements and maintains policies and procedures for the use of technology to improve the delivery of research, teaching and administrative activities. Demonstrates innovation and creativity in identifying technologies and processes to streamline and reduce inefficiencies in IT workflows, in order to benefit end users and the Faculty.
6. With Departmental IT staff, prepare and makes presentations; writes and updates computer network and workstation connectivity use policies and documentation
7. Provides overall management and operational support for Forestry's LAN including configuration, installation and maintenance of hardware, software, LAN systems and network security. Manages and supports the operation, configuration and upgrade of the Faculty's servers (both Windows and Linux). The systems manage is responsible for
- Active Directory 2003.
- Antivirus management.
- Data backup services for Faculty core services.
- Routing and networking in a multi-segment switched Ethernet LAN environment.
- DNS and DHCP services.
- iSCSI SAN for the Faculty's storage needs.
In collaboration with the Departmental IT staff, the manager is jointly responsible for:
- perimeter firewall services,
- email services.
- virtualized production servers.
- desktop deployment and management
- patch management.
- Image deployment processes for the undergraduate computer laboratories.
8. Manages the technological facilities, including selection, purchase and maintenance of equipment and software, keeping current with developments and trends that occur in computer services, media services and telecommunication services, communicating them to faculty and staff.
9. Responsible for the administrative computing needs of the Dean's Office including: design, maintenance, support and training users.
10. Manages the Faculty's 2 Undergraduate Computing Laboratories; including hiring, training, supervising and evaluating performance of the Computer Lab Manager, and overseeing the technical aspects of the laboratories including security.
11. Provides instructional assistance on the use of facilities (laboratories and connected classrooms); manage the annual Dean's Office and core services IT budget (~$300K); maintain inventory and manage hardware and software agreements. Plans and recommends changes or purchases to software and hardware.
12. Seeks funding for and develops cost recovery policy and procedures for IT software and services.
13. Negotiates, reviews and delegates work to various contractors both internal/external to UBC.
14. Coordinates the installation of the University's Administrative Systems (FMIS, IHRIS, ORSIL and Viking) to all administrative units within the Faculty.
15. Liaison with UBC central administrative services and UBC IT.
16. Other duties as may be required.
CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR
It is critical to the viability of the Faculty that decisions regarding the allocation of resources are made with a thorough understanding and insight into the current developments and future trends that occur in the areas of networking, computer services, audio-visual services and telecommunications. Errors of judgement in these areas would severely limit our ability to compete for research funding and graduate the best students immediately and well into the future. Failure to effectively manage the technological facilities of the Faculty would severely impair the day to day teaching, administrative and research functions of the Faculty. All efforts must be made to design and maintain fault tolerant systems.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Reports to the Dean and Associate Dean, Undergraduate Studies, and the Chair of the Faculty IT advisory committee. Works in collaboration with departmental IT staff. Generally works independently under broad directives.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
Supervise, hire, train and evaluate performance of technical staff, computer lab assistants and coop-students. Fosters a positive environment for all IT personnel in order to benefit IT users throughout the Faculty. Negotiates and reviews services provided by internal and external contractors. Coordinates overall continuity and compatibility of the network and computing services with departmental computer staff
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position will have an office in the Forest Sciences Centre and will work in various laboratories and Offices of the Dean as required. Travel to the off-site Research Forest locations may also be required from time to time.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- University degree in Computer Science plus a minimum of 8 years of industry relevant experience including at least 2 years of supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Minimum 2 years experience in managing annual budgets in excess of $100K.
- MCSE certification or eligibility for certification required. Experienced in Active Directory 2003 and antivirus management.
- Demonstrated experience with networked, heterogeneous environments of Windows XP/2003, Linux and OS X.
- Experience managing centralized file sharing, printing services and data back-up facilities in an Active Directory 2003 environment.
- Familiarity with email services and perimeter firewalls in an enterprise environment.
- Supervisory, budgetary, presentation, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills required.
- Demonstrated organizational, analytical, problem-solving, contract and leadership skills required.
- Ability to work independently, under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
