Reporting to the Director of the Tutoring and Writing Center, Professional Writing Tutors help students engage thoughtfully in writing and revision, offering empathy and feedback in 1:1 visits. Professional writing tutors should be experienced in long-form academic writing projects such as theses and dissertations.
Responsibilities:
Support students in 1:1 tutoring sessions (in person and remote)
Create resources, such as templates, visual aids, guides, checklists, or tip sheets to help students understand common writing challenges and expectations across disciplines
Assist with writing groups and writing studios
Develop and facilitate student-facing workshops based on interest and need
Engage in supervisory meetings and team meetings as scheduled
Complete visit notes for tutoring sessions; alert center leadership about any concerning sessions
Engage in professional development, team building, and reflective practice
Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Education, or other writing-intensive field (Ph.D. preferred)
Demonstrated experience working with writers engaged in long-form writing projects such as theses and dissertations
In-depth understanding of academic writing conventions, research methodologies, source integration, and citation standards (MLA, APA, Chicago) as applied in advanced research writing.
Skilled at identifying students' struggles and addressing them patiently and creatively.
Ability to make students feel comfortable and motivated, explaining complex writing techniques in an accessible way
Ability to adapt to each individual student’s needs
Experience supporting neurodivergent students preferred
Experience supporting English language learners and multilingual students preferred
