Course Description:
The first two modules of the course will focus on how to design, negotiate and implement an international trade strategy. The classes will combine lectures with case studies, presentations, and discussions on the fundamentals of trade agreements, trade policy formulation and trade strategy.
The final module of the course will be a simulation of the negotiation of a prospective free trade agreement. In teams, students will plan negotiating strategies based on confidential mandate letters and implement these strategies in bilateral negotiation sessions. Students will also draft and present country statements and draft legal texts to be negotiated throughout the simulation.

Requirements:
The Common Law Section is seeking candidates who are leaders in the legal profession. An LL.B., J.D., or equivalent is required for this position. Membership in the Law Society of Ontario (or equivalent) in good standing is an asset. The successful candidate will have significant experience in written and oral advocacy. This candidate will further have significant experience with international trade policy and in conducting trade negotiations. Prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.
The Common Law Section reserves the right to select a candidate who does not fully meet each of these requirements, where the candidate’s selection would be beneficial to the program, the course, the students or for a related reason.

This course is offered during the January intensive session and not in the winter session. Candidates must be able to teach each day for the month of January.
