Description
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Project Direction and Leadership
- Direct and manage the research program (alongside the PI)
- Develops plans and work processes for Lab projects based on understanding of project requirements and timelines
- Defines roles and responsibilities of staff, based on understanding of individual skills and project requirements
- Manage complex departmental issues and challenging interpersonal interactions
- Developed and implement scientific vision
- Assist with developing and implementing research projects for summer students, graduate & post-doctoral students, as well as research staff
- Oversee research progress and adjust project objectives as necessary
- Contribute to departmental administration (organizing meetings, journal club, seminar series)
- Oversee the development and management of the lab budget
Staff Management
- Responsible for working with Principal investigator to determine positions that would support the strategic goals of the Research group
- Manages the creation job profiles, hiring, and onboarding of staff
- Contribute to the mentoring and training of staff, defining expectations and assignment of tasks and responsibilities
- Manages research staff; ensures work tasks are completed on schedule and standards and policies are followed
- Manage performance and development of individual team members to maximize success and motivation
- Effectively leads staff through changes in plans, approach, or scope, allocates resources in a manner that maximizes the productivity of the team
Use of Technical Knowledge & Expertise
- Serve as research lead on cross-functional laboratory, basic-science, preclinical and clinical project teams; working as leader to design, plan and deliver multiple individual projects via team and matrix management
- Authoring or contributing to abstracts/manuscripts for publication
- Collaborate in designing research projects
- Review assay validation and bioanalytical reports and provide training to internal staff
- Oversee the design, implementation, optimization for technical aspects of new research projects
Judgment and Decision Making
- Use judgment to identify and resolve day-today technical and operational issues
- Make decisions in ambiguous situations within established processes pertaining to the project and team
- Propose new solutions to the team for potential and existing problems, integrating lessons learned from previous projects as appropriate
- Responsible for the development and management of project and program budget
- Risk management: ensure risks are identified and risk planning completed in the project planning stage. Proactively anticipate problems and develop preventative solutions
Communication
- Establish and maintain visible and active engagement with key opinion leaders, professional societies, and academic institutions
- Oversee completion of annual reports
- Act as a liaison to provide communication between research teams, supervisors, and funders
- Coach and mentor students
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Masters or PhD. in related to health sciences
- Previous experience in project and people management, and in translational/clinical research is desirable
- Experience hiring and managing staff in a unionized environment is an asset
- Must maintain a good clinical practice certification
- Excellent leadership and organizational skills
- Must possess above-average interpersonal and communication skills
- Self-directed, enthusiastic and honest in performance of duties
- Hold a superior understanding of the University environment including PeopleSoft and eFin
- Knowledgeable in reviewing medical/scientific research protocols
- Proficiency with databases, database design, statistical software and electronic medical records
- Knowledge of research design and basic knowledge of biostatistics
- Experience in working with internal/external teams to manage and grow a project and/or program
- Extensive knowledge of patient privacy policies
- Understanding and comfort with procedures such as cerebral blood flow (CBF) and fitness assessment (VO2max) is an asset
