Senior lab Engineer - General Education Unit
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Lab Engineer to join our dynamic GENS 101-Grand Challenges course team. The ideal candidate will hold a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Engineering and have prior experience working in a university lab setting. The candidate should possess strong technical expertise, a passion for hands-on work, and the ability to support students in their learning and project development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate, maintain, and supervise laboratory equipment, tools, and materials.
- Ensure proper implementation of lab safety protocols and best practices.
- Provide technical support and mentorship to students during course sessions and throughout their projects.
- Support course instructors in preparing lab activities, demonstrations, and experiments.
- Manage inventory and procurement of lab supplies and components.
- Calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain desktop prototyping machines.
- Assist in the development and assembly of student’s projects.
- Provide training and workshops on lab tools, programming, and prototyping techniques.
- Participate in the design, setup, and continuous improvement of labs, including selecting appropriate tools, machines, and systems.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing).
Experience/Skills:
- Minimum 8 years experience working in university labs is required.
- Excellent experience in 3D modelling, prototyping, desktop fabrication machines, and workshop machines & tools, and at least a basic understanding of electronics, Arduino, and programming AND/OR Excellent hands-on experience in programming (Arduino, C/C++, Python), basic electronics, and microcontroller systems, familiarity with CAD software and at least a basic understanding of prototyping, desktop fabrication machines, and workshop tools.
- Familiarity with lab safety standards, material handling, and tool maintenance.
- Demonstrated experience in designing and establishing lab environments, including layout planning, tool selection, safety setup, and integration with academic needs.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with experience in supporting students or teams with project development from a technical standpoint—especially in selecting the right tools, components, materials, and kits for the job.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Basic experience in designing electrical solar panel systems (Preferred)
- Basic experience in PCB design (Preferred)
- Basic Knowledge of IoT, sensors, and embedded systems (Preferred)
- Basic experience with Blackboard LMS (Preferred)
