The Office of Field Education in the Faculty of Social Work is currently seeking a Recurring Part-time Field Education Coordinator.
POSITION IS IN LOCATED IN LETHBRIDGE, ALBERTA
The Coordinator for the Office of Field Education will be located in the faculty's Southern Alberta Region office (Lethbridge), reporting to the Director of Field Education and works collaboratively with the Director and Coordinators from other regions and programs to implement field education curricula in the Faculty of Social Work. This role provides opportunities to work closely with students, faculty, and the broader social services community, and is therefore a critical position in representing the Faculty in the community and developing and maintaining relationships with community partners.
This Recurring Part-time position for approximately 1 year is located at the Faculty of Social Work's Lethbridge campus; however, some travel to meet with community partners and participation in off-campus activities will be required. The Coordinator will work up to 35 hours per week dependent on the tasks required. Hours of work are typically Monday to Friday, but there will be the need for flexibility to work outside regular hours for certain events, for travel, or at particularly busy times.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Provide leadership and represent field education perspectives and issues within the SAR region (e.g., at regional meetings, faculty committees and field education committee meetings).
- Ensure FSW field education policies, practices and procedures are implemented in the SAR region, including managing and developing region-specific field education resources, as needed.
- Plan and implement processes for students' placement in practica as required by their degree programs:
a. For the BSW program in Lethbridge and students from our other programs that are doing their practicum in the Southern Alberta Region (SAR).
b. For the MSW online clinical cohort and support other MSW students living in the SAR from other programs such as the laddering pathway. - Recruit agencies for BSW-student placements and where appropriate MSW online clinical and MSW laddering pathway.
- Review agency applications for affiliation and conduct reviews of affiliation agreements as needed; consulting Legal Services as needed.
- Work cooperatively with agencies to initiate, develop and improve field education opportunities in the Region.
- Support students, instructors and community agencies in the process and understanding of the Community Engaged Practicum.
- Ensure adequate qualifications among Field Instructors.
- Ensure students, Field Instructors and Faculty Liaisons have timely and accurate information including relevant materials - about Field requirements, policies and procedures.
- Provide Field Instructors with orientation to the Field Education program and offer opportunities for ongoing training and information exchange.
- Support and consult with Faculty Liaisons in an ongoing manner throughout the academic year; in relation to their role and student issues that may arise.
- Work with agency personnel, Field Instructors, and Faculty Liaisons to develop and improve the quality of student learning.
- Manage and track information and processes related to Field Education in the Lethbridge-based BSW and MSW online clinical cohort following FOIP regulations.
- Develop processes for the administration of the Field Education program in collaboration the Field Education Team.
- Ensure that all components of the Field Education in the Region program are evaluated and the results used for program development.
- Work with the Field Administrator to ensure:
a. IPT, other internal field databases, and agency files are maintained and regularly updated following FOIP regulations.
b. Sectioning of students.
c. Field education documentation is developed and distributed to students, field instructors and Faculty Field Liaisons. - Work collaboratively with the SAR staff and faculty to coordinate Field Education with other aspects of student field education experience.
- As necessary, consult with students, Faculty, and agencies regarding Field Education.
- Identify opportunities and coordinate events or initiatives related to Field Instructor appreciation and recognition.
- Support and consult with faculty liaisons throughout the practicum - for example, supporting liaisons in resolving particularly challenging practicum situations or issues that may arise.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of an effective field education model, including participating in meetings and ensuring that adequate policies and procedures are established and are being followed.
- Network with other Canadian coordinators and directors of field education, and to support scholarship in the area of field education.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- MSW degree is required and experience working with field education is an asset.
- Currently registered with Alberta College of Social Workers is required.
- Experience and knowledge with post-secondary infrastructure systems is a strong asset.
- Experience as a field instructor (practicum supervisor) is an asset.
- Experience with the Community Engaged Practicum is required.
- Excellent computer skills are required (Microsoft Office) along with superior administrative and organizational skills and demonstrated strength and proficiency in writing.
- Experience working with databases, and with the Intern Placement Tracking System (IPT), in particular, and Qualitrix, is an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively and establish good working relationships with students, faculty, field instructors and agencies/community.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Demonstrated capacity to work effectively, adapt, and be flexible and innovative in a complex, demanding environment.
- Good knowledge of social work practice community in the Southern Alberta Region.
- An understanding of the key role of field education in social work education, and the contribution that social workers and agencies make to a student's professional education.
- Knowledge and expertise in formulating competitive strategies and practices, through an understanding of best practices and social service sector and student needs.
- Strong understanding of social work agencies, field education and how to leverage our program to a strategic advantage.
