Job Description
Department: Counseling and Student Accessibility Services (CTE Grant)
General Statement of Job
The Counselor provides individual and/or group services to all South Texas College students district-wide and helps achieve academic success through the following services: academic counseling, career counseling, and mental health counseling. Also facilitates accommodations for students with disabilities, temporary accommodations under pregnant and parenting services and assistance to other populations.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Provides services to CTE students via face-to-face, phone, virtual, walk-in or by appointment basis.
- Provides mental health crisis intervention and short-term brief counseling to students.
- Provides students with case management.
- Collaborates with, and refers students to, appropriate college, community, and state resources.
- Develops, organizes, and conducts presentations and workshops to students, faculty, staff, high schools, and the community.
- Maintains confidential and electronic files on all student contacts by utilizing electronic records management systems for purposes of accurately and timely documenting communications and other supports provided.
- Cultivates and maintains collaborative relationships with faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure access for Counseling and Student Accessibility Services (CSAS).
- Consults with and advises on department procedures with faculty, staff, and others working with students receiving CSAS.
- Handles and responds to service requests in a timely manner in accordance with department procedures.
- Participates in transition activities and provides high school to college transition information to students, parents, and high school partners.
- Gathers and evaluates information obtained in the interactive process such as disability documentation, assessment of individual student’s functional limitations and access barriers, review of academic program requirements, to determine accommodations needed to facilitate access to participate in college activities.
- Provides supervision, guidance, support, and training to assigned work-study and/or interns as needed.
- Maintains understanding of the College’s programs, policies, procedures and academic standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
- Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, or related field required.
- At least two (2) years of experience working with special populations or related programs in counseling, educational, or social agencies required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of counseling and interviewing skills.
- Knowledge of specific needs for special populations.
- Bilingual, English/Spanish, preferred.
- Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed; willing to travel throughout Hidalgo and Starr counties using own means of reliable transportation.
- Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from large groups of students, managers, clients, and the general public.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
- Security Sensitive position: All applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy.
- In addition, subject to a federal background check.
- Must have or qualify for a valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
- Licensed Professional Counselor-Associate (LPC-A), Licensed Master Social Worker under clinical supervision, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Associate (LMFT-A), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
- Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
- Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
- Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
- Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
- Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
- Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
- Standing particularly for sustained periods of time.
- Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
- Close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
- Mobility to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another.
