Hiring Unit:
Civil Engineering - Prof. Malomo
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor Prof. Malomo. This position is situated in the Department of Civil Engineering. Tests will be performed in the Jamieson Structures Lab at McGill University, downtown campus. Technical and safety training will be offered by expert technicians.
Main Responsibilities/Duties:
The successful candidate will hold a support role assisting struct-lab members in:
• Preparing masonry specimens for freezing/thawing experiments
• Conducting freezing/thawing experiments on masonry specimens •
Performing non-destructive tests on weathered masonry units
• Conducting experiments to characterize the mechanical properties of masonry materials
• Preparing, casting, and demolding mortar specimens
• Assisting struct-lab members in performing out-of-plane experiments on unreinforced masonry walls with and without retrofitting panels
• Collecting experimental data and uploading it to struct-lab databases (e.g., SharePoint)
• Writing technical reports/memoranda detailing the methodology used in the experiments conducted at the laboratory and data analysis and summarizing progress
• Reporting progress of ongoing experiments to immediate supervisors
• Being able to frequently move heavy equipment up to 50lbs

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
Strong technical writing skills
Familiarity with MS Office and/or MATLAB/Octave
Previous experience with masonry and testing in a laboratory
Good working knowledge of online databases
Being currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
