Summary:
The Senior Safety advisor is an occupational health and safety practitioner leading and supporting USask safety programs. The Senior Safety Advisor leads, executes, and oversees the incident management process, fire safety program, and the safety equipment annual compliance inspection program.
The Senior Safety Advisor will manage incidents, including classification, and will coordinate, schedule, and conduct incident investigations and provide recommendations for corrective actions as required. Support for data analysis and trend reporting to identify injury prevention opportunities will be required as well as providing support for WCB claims management activities, when needed.
The Senior Safety Advisor provides stakeholders services according to legislation, best practices, and the university’s safety management system to build a high-performance culture at the organizational, unit and individual levels.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead the management of the incident reporting processes and database;
- Conduct incident investigation and reports with corrective measures for assigned colleges/units;
- Facilitate incident investigation and follow up processes with college/units, supervisors and other resources, as needed;
- Plan, coordinate, facilitate and participate in inspections to support department programs and to help ensure regulatory compliance;
- Liaise with the Saskatoon Fire Department inspection program including inspections, maintenance and administration of inspection records, deficiencies, confirms deficiencies are resolved;
- Facilitate and leads fire drills; maintains and communicates schedules, evaluations and records.
- Manage the fire extinguisher program including management of service provider;
- Triage and classify reported incidents as required;
- Triage and ensure completion of Hazard Reports;
- Support the WCB processes, communications, and reporting requirements;
- Identify and report incident trends;
- Develop and communicate reports of incident/injury statistics;
- Conduct workplace inspections;
- Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Relevant Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- A minimum seven years of work experience in health, safety, and environmental with knowledge of occupational health and safety standards, regulations and legislations, experience conducting inspections and investigations and experience communicating finding and recommendations
- Previous experience working in a unionized post-secondary academic environment preferred
- A Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation would be an asset
