Position purpose
As part of the Office of Communications and Public Affairs team, helps ensure the high quality of University communications. Provides English-to-French translation services as well as French-language editing, proofreading and adaptation of diverse texts from all University sectors. Provides advice on terminology and language; contributes to the smooth running of Language Services.
This recruitment posting is intended to fill two separate positions, one for a 2-year contract, the other for a 3-year contract.
In this role your responsibilities will include:
- Fully independently and with great attention to detail, translates from French to English, and edits, proofreads and adapts into French, a wide range of moderately to highly complex French-language documents from all sections of the University (senior management, faculties, academic and administrative services).
- Manages assigned client files and projects, which includes negotiating deadlines and maintaining ongoing relationships with many internal and external clients and partners. Continuously manages own workload and work procedures.
- Provides expert advice on language, translation and terminology matters to colleagues and to all members of the University community.
- Depending on operational requirements, helps coordinate common Language Services tasks: evaluating service requests and assigning work in an optimal manner to both internal and external language professionals, and adjusting workload based on changing priorities.
- Conducts quality control by checking the language accuracy, style and content of translations and other texts produced internally and externally. Helps guide interns as well as less-experienced, newly hired, or early career language professionals in the unit.
- Knows about standard professional language tools (translation memory software and databases used by Language Services) and how to effectively use these tools to process requests quickly and effectively and to provide advice to clients.
- Helps manage, contribute to and improve online language resources (writing guides, terminology databases, etc.) and helps promote the use of these tools on campus.
- Participates in improving internal Language Services operations and processes by recommending best practices.
- Participates closely in managing and improving information systems required for the smooth operation of Language Services, such as translation memory software and systems used to process requests., Assists in implementing new systems and applications as needed.
What you will bring:
- Honours bachelor’s degree in translation or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Certification by a professional association is an asset.
- Five years’ recent experience in a position in which at least 70% of the work was actual translation.
- Sufficient mastery of translation, editing, writing, adaptation, terminology and proofreading methods and techniques to be able to work completely independently.
- Superior mastery of written French, with solid understanding of English. Flawless quality of work.
- Excellent customer service skills, with proven ability to provide detailed advice on language to a variety of clients in order to produce high quality communication products in which usage is standardized.
- High degree of versatility, including a proven ability to translate, edit and adapt promotional material and news-worthy texts as readily as complex administrative, technical or scientific documents.
- Proven ability to take on a heavy workload, adjust priorities and quickly renegotiate deadlines in a high-pressure work environment characterized by many emergencies and frequent interruptions.
- Initiative, strong problem-solving skills and proven ability to manage complex translation and editing projects involving numerous parties.
- Proven ability to negotiate with clients and, at times, with external providers.
- Working knowledge of print and electronic reference tools used in the profession, including translation memories.
- Ability to communicate effectively and tactfully in English and in French, both orally and in writing.
