Job Summary
The primary focus of the Research Assistant 3 is to coordinate the RapidOmics 2.0 Clinical Study, in the Department of Medical Genetics, at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospitals. This is a study investigating new genetic testing technology in a cohort of critically ill babies and children. Responsibilities are broad, and are expected to change during the course of the study. They will range from administrative (e.g. drafting protocols and reports), to patient related (e.g. identifying and enrolling study participants, arranging genetic testing and specimen transport), to data management (e.g. database creation, data coding, and analysis).
Exceptional organizational skills, as well as a high degree of motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative, are required for this position
Organizational Status
Reports to the Principal Investigator (PI) and Research Genetic Counsellor. Works with the Principal Investigator, Co-investigators, research managers, clinic nurses, and clerical staff associated with the study.
Work Performed
- Drafting protocols
- Assisting with drafting consent forms and related material for the Research Ethics application
- Literature searches as required
- Responding to correspondence with all study personnel and referring physicians
- Recording and summarizing project meeting minutes
- Helping to identify and enroll eligible study participants
- Creating and maintaining research charts
- Creating appropriate requisitions, assisting participants regarding sample procurement
- Communicating with study participants and their families regarding appointments, guiding them through sample collection procedures, gathering information for research questionnaires
- Using Hospital’s electronic record system to extract required phenotypic data from clinical records,
- Creating a project database to record genotype and phenotype data, and to track study participants’ progress
- Sample documentation, shipping, and follow-up
- Data coding, entry and analysis
- Drafting reports
- Drafting abstracts, posters, manuscripts
- Ensuring an ethical and confidential approach to all documentation
Other related duties as required
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The Research Assistant 3 is required to conduct the research activities in an ethical manner and to maintain strict confidentiality regarding study participants. Along with other colleagues, the Research Assistant is accountable for conduct concerning participant-related activities, to the Principal Investigator, the Department Head, and the Research Assistant's governing professional organization. Beyond that, errors in this clinical study could have serious consequences to patients and families enrolled in this study. Any error reflects on the professionalism of all study members.
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision in carrying out duties and responsibilities, as listed, but is expected to schedule and prioritize their own work; receives instructions during orientation and will be oriented to any new activities and procedural changes but is expected to show considerable initiative. The Principal Investigator and the Research Manager will supervise the overall work.
Supervision Given
Over the course of the project, the Position may be asked to supervise student research assistants, Work Learn Students, or other workers at Tech 1 or 2 level.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Related experience in a research or clinical genetics environment is required.
Computer literacy and experience required includes MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Excel.
Knowledge of REDCap and BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital electronic medical record system, and the UBC Research. Ethics Application System (RISE) is an asset.
Highly effective oral and written communication is essential
Analytical, interpersonal and organization skills, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team are all essential.
