Job Summary
The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is a partnership between the Faculties of Applied Science and Medicine, established in 2017. Currently, the School has 36 core and joint faculty members located on campus and at healthcare research institutes, over 400 undergraduate and undergraduate students, more than 20 administrative staff, and several research core service facilities. In 2024/2025, the SBME will move into a new building on campus, which will act as a hub for biomedical engineering activities at UBC and beyond. The School serves as a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation, aspiring to be a global leader in the field. Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through the unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology.
Dr. Kelly McNagny’s Laboratory in the Biomedical Research Centre at the University of British Columbia is looking to hire a part-time Research Assistant/Technician to join the team. The research technician will facilitate the smooth running of multiple projects, including the LNP-RNA immune-engineering project. The successful candidate will be directed by and will report to the Principal Investigator.
Organizational Status
The Research Assistant will report directly to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Kelly McNagny.
Work Performed
Carries out the following tasks by utilizing standard techniques and protocols. Training will be provided as required for the following key items:
Handling animal and mouse tissue harvesting (e.g., lymph nodes, spleen, blood, muscle).
Assists with conducting molecular and cellular techniques, including: PCR assays, flow cytometry, intracellular and cytometric bead arrays, and cytokine measurements.
Assists with culturing mammalian cells and preparing of DNA, RNA, and protein samples.
Assists with performing molecular techniques such as RT-PCR and qPCR, western blotting, immunostaining, ELISA, FACs, etc.
Maintaining sample inventories in -80°C and -20°C freezers.
Organizing the laboratory and stock, maintaining inventory, and distributing supplies. Maintaining a detailed lab notebook.
Distributing work assignments to undergraduate and graduate students, employees at lower classification levels in the use of equipment, techniques and procedures.
Carrying out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
Consequences of Error/Judgement
The successful applicant will exercise a considerable amount of judgment, responsibility, and initiative in determining work procedures and methods and coordinating the work of the unit. Errors made could compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the Unit, Centre, Institute, and individual Investigator(s).
Supervision Received
Works under general supervision in carrying out familiar phases of duties and responsibilities; receives instructions during orientation and on subsequent new assignments or changes in procedures.
Supervision Given
May distribute work assignments to employees at lower classification levels and initiate new employees into routines, procedures, and the operation of equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in cellular immunology or cell biology lab preferred.
