Position purpose:
Under the authority of the Assistant Director Undergraduate Studies, assists the Senior Specialist, laboratory support, Exercise Physiology with all assigned undergraduate laboratories. Performs a variety of technical activities to support students, teaching assistants, and the Senior Specialist in the assigned teaching labs. Provides support to teaching assistants in delivering lessons and accurate theoretical content and responds to students' questions as needed. Ensures students’ safety by enforcing protocol guidelines, and provides technical advice, support, and guidance to lab users, with a focus on the setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of lab equipment. May assist with analysis, design, development, production, testing, and the operation of laboratory protocols to the specification of the department or faculty’s curriculum or requirements to achieve the learning objectives and ensure safe working practices. The work is performed with moderate supervision, under clear guidelines, and requires a good general knowledge of the various technologies used.
This is a four (4) month part-time contract for the Winter 2026 academic session. The schedule will depend on registrations.
The annual salary will be prorated according to hours worked.
Nota: This position requires working variable hours, including evenings, with shifts that may range from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., depending on the lab schedules established for the academic year.
In this role, your key responsibilities include:
Technical Support: Assists with the testing, maintenance of assigned laboratory equipment and materials to ensure accurate and proper functionality. Assists in the analysis and diagnosis of the causes of lab equipment and process malfunctions and, under supervision, carries out the required minor repair actions in order to maintain lab.
Pedagogical Support: Acts as a resource person for the teaching assistants during the operation of the laboratories. Supports teaching assistants in delivering accurate theoretical content and assists both teaching assistants and students in using lab equipment and materials to enhance end-user proficiency. Promotes the responsible use of all lab equipment and materials to contribute to the safety of all users and to safeguard the value of the University’s assets. Supports and monitors students during their activities in laboratories set in different environments (ex: gym, dance studios, etc).
Health and Safety: Reviews students’ confidential medical information to determine their ability to participate in experimental lab protocols and ensures that they operate within the limits of their health-related capacities. Ensures that all assigned laboratories operate in accordance with the Health and Safety rules of the University, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and any other applicable regulations. Is responsible for the collection, storage or disposal of bio-hazardous materials. Maintains the first aid kits for the exercise physiology laboratories.
Inventory Control: Keeps track of the inventory of the assigned equipment, instrumentation and materials located in the assigned lab. Assigns proper identification and maintains records in the inventory database. Tracks the movement of items within the lab environment.
Lab protocols and activities: Works closely with the Laboratory Senior Specialist to develop laboratory protocols, and to organize laboratories and laboratory teaching materials. Works closely with the Laboratory Senior Specialist to prepare and correct laboratory exams. In collaboration with the Laboratory Senior Specialist, conducts workshops during laboratory visits (i.e. University Day and visiting secondary school groups)
Documentation: Tracks students’ attendance, tardiness, early departures, and homework completion. Assists with preparation of laboratory manuals and other technical lab documentation and helps with making them available to students and teaching assistants when necessary.
What you will bring:
Knowledge of Exercise Physiology or related discipline acquired by university postgraduate degree (minimum M.Sc.), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 3 years of experience in a teaching / research laboratory environment.
Must be a registered Certified Exercise Physiologist according to the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology’s (CSEP).
Valid and most up-to-date first aid and CPR-C/DEA
Knowledge of laboratory tools, equipment, instruments, materials, and hazards and their safe usage.
Knowledge of Health and Safety rules, regulations and University policies and procedures related to the operation of labs and lab equipment/material.
Knowledge of and experience with lab protocols and procedures concerned with exercise physiology testing.
Comprehensive knowledge of application software such as web site applications, data collection software, databases, spreadsheets, word-processing, etc.
Experience in providing technical support and advice to users for lab equipment.
Experience in preparing and developing scientific experiments.
Ability to communicate difficult concepts and procedures in a clear and concise manner.
Ability to bridge theory and practice and facilitate the transfer of knowledge of undergraduate students and teaching assistants.
Ability to read and understand texts of considerable difficulty requiring understanding of concepts, procedures, and instructions.
Analytical skills to diagnose and adjust laboratory equipment and material issues.
Good interpersonal skills.
Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written).
