Course Description:
The course is intended to be an introduction to the various scientific aspects of forensic sciences that are often relied upon in the criminal justice system. As part of each lecture there will be a discussion about the law that has developed around the various sciences;, however, the course is primarily aimed at educating students on the law.
The course will begin with an introductory lecture on the law relating to expert evidence and the role of legal ethics as it applies to forensic science. The lectures that follow will consist of presentations given by recognized experts on topics including fingerprints, bloodstain pattern analysis, impairment by alcohol and drugs, DNA, pathology, psychiatry, firearms, and computer crime. The presentations will include discussion about the involvement of the police, experts, crown attorneys and defence counsel and will make reference to court cases where science has played a role.

Requirements:
The Common Law Section is seeking candidates who are leaders in the legal profession. An LL.B., J.D., or equivalent is required for this position. Membership in the Law Society of Ontario (or equivalent) in good standing is also required. The successful candidate will have significant experiencein the area of evidence law and will be knowledgeable in forensic science. Prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.
The Common Law Section reserves the right to select a candidate who does not fully meet each of these requirements, where the candidate’s selection would be beneficial to the program, the course, the students or for a related reason.
