Position SummaryWith the direction of the McNair Director in the Academic Advancement Program (AAP), the Assistant Director for the McNair Scholars Program has major responsibilities that include: the planning and coordination of the UCLA McNair Scholars Program; the hiring, training, and supervision of graduate mentors and student support staff; identification, recruitment and work with Faculty mentors on the academic progress of McNair students; work with Director and faculty to select and monitor academic and programmatic progress of McNair students; liaison with appropriate campus programs and departments; evaluation of McNair Scholar Program services; development of presentations and publications for McNair Scholar Programs. The Assistant Director will prioritize and complete on-going tasks following established AAP and College guidelines and written program expectations. Additional assignments may be made by the McNair Director on a project basis. Work and goal attainment are reviewed regularly by the McNair Director.

Qualifications1. Demonstrated experience, both practical and theoretical, with professional and peer counseling processes and applications to first-generation, low-income students. (Required)
2. Demonstrated skill in problem solving, data gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information, generating alternatives and implementing innovative and creative actions to enhance program operational processes to address the needs and concerns of AAP (Academic Advancement Program) students. (Required)
3. Demonstrated ability to assess current procedures and to develop new systems, guidelines and procedures to increase efficiency and effectiveness of the program. (Required)
4. Demonstrated skill in writing grammatically correct, concise, logical and analytical correspondence, proposals, and reports. (Required)
5. Demonstrated skill in reading, understanding, interpreting and applying staff personnel policies and, administrative guidelines and reports. (Required)
6. Demonstrated interpersonal skills in effectively counseling students from diverse social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds. (Required)
7. Working knowledge of fundamental principles of learning and human development theory especially regarding non-traditional college students. (Required)
8. Demonstrated ability to make oral group presentations in order to provide information, explain new and continuing procedures, policies and projects to students, departments, staff and campus. (Required)
9. Knowledge of time demands and academic abilities required for UCLA undergraduate classes and majors. (Preferred)
10. Ability to assess students' skills, knowledge, and abilities and to appropriately assist students whose behavior is inconsistent with and detrimental to academic objectives. (Preferred)
11. Knowledge of campus and community resources such as Tutorials, Class Notes, exam files, library system, TA's, etc. (Preferred)
12. Working knowledge of the function and services delivery systems and of UCLA student service departments including, but not limited to; the Graduate Division, Undergraduate Education, Business Enterprises, Housing, Parking Services, Financial Aid, Registrar, Orientation, F/TSP, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Career Center. (Preferred)
