Job Summary
The Research Program (RP) Manager is responsible for providing leadership and promoting and advancing excellence in clinical and translational research, and health research training initiatives in the Principal Investigator’s lab. The RP Manager will be responsible and accountable for the development, implementation and achievement of strategic priorities related to Principal Investigator’s research program, and will contribute actively to the achieving research and health research training program goals.
Organizational Status
The Samuel Lab’s mission is to conduct clinically impactful clinical and translational research that will improve the lives of people with kidney disease. Clinical research will be conducted in collaboration with health care providers within the Division of Nephrology at the BC Children’s Hospital.
Position to whom this person reports: Principal Investigator, and works collaboratively with national co-investigators and local team members.
Positions with whom this person works: All research program members, including research and administrative staff, trainees (graduate, post-graduate, co-op, flex and summer students) and various research staff from other departments (local and national) who are integral to the conduct of other research studies (clinical research coordinators, lab technicians),Contacts (internal and external to the University): Institutional Review Board (UBC) and Hospital Research Review Committee (C&W), finance offices at UBC, BCCHRI, CRSU, and PHSA, other individuals who are working in equivalent research positions either in the institution or in other institutions who are research collaborators, patients and parents of patients involved in research studies.
Shared office space in the Clinical Support Building, BC Children s Hospital Research Institute. Desktop computer and telephone access available. Flexibility in work hours may be required.
Work Performed
Team Management
Manages the clinical and translational research activities of the Samuel lab. This includes developing a plan to implement all studies conducted within the lab, as well as national and international collaborative network studies and training activities the principal investigator may be involved in.
Provide overall program supervision to ensure that the team achieves accurate and timely data collection for studies, which may involve participation in the clinical setting to recruit subjects (children and parents) for clinical research projects, and assisting with logistical organization in the clinical setting.
Manage research program team members, including: hiring, onboarding and mentoring of research staff and trainees, and supervising activities of all team members, and support setting up of salaries and student stipends.
Conduct performance evaluations and advise Principal Investigator on staff performance and work distribution; manage team relationships and participate in conflict resolution if necessary.
Create, promote and foster a respectful work environment that is conducive to optimal research and clinical care, where mutual respect, integrity, diversity and inclusion are valued and central to all encounters.
Ensure that the highest level of professionalism is practiced in all interactions with patients, peers, supervisors, staff and other disciplines.
Research Operations
Oversees and conduct a translational research program for childhood nephrotic syndrome, and coordinate establishment of a national biobank.
Manages and leads research activities, follows up on action items and deliverables to ensure completion, and keeps the project on track and focused on achieving the aims.
Coordinating with other research institutions, legal offices and research staff to manage the migration of the custodianship of the biobank, its registry, data and materials to UBC.
Drafts training materials for staff at 6 sites across Canada, and leads training sessions with site-specific coordinators for biobank standard operating procedures and maintain study and samples at each site.
Responsible for the daily operations of the research laboratory including planning and managing laboratory infrastructure and oversee supply inventories and equipment repairs as well as developing and overseeing sample collection.
Maintains and develops research related records, databases and program specific protocols and ensures implementation and compliance (e.g. biobank standard operating procedures, fidelity to research data entry in RedCap).
Prepares regulatory documentation including human ethics applications for submissions, laboratory protocols, safety training procedures in compliance with biosafety regulations, required for study start up and maintenance.
Coordinates with contracts office for research contracts, including data and material transfer agreements between institutions.
Takes a leadership role in enhancing and advancing clinical research activities within the lab and also the Division of Nephrology as a whole (i.e. to be an ambassador for research). This includes developing an understanding of the clinical research programs, identifying programs that would benefit most from advice and support, and working with the Nephrology Division head and Principal Investigator to identify key stakeholders and building relationships with them.
Allocation of office and research space and curation of equipment, furniture, computer hardware and software and other equipment as needed.
Advise Principal Investigator on resources (e.g. funding) available related to clinical research; maintains up-to-date understanding of clinical research funding and opportunities.
Supports completion of funding/grant applications for investigator-initiated projects in the lab.
Supports completion and submission of manuscripts related to the Principal Investigator’s primary research output.
Creates an annual report highlighting research achievements which can be circulated to the patient partners, Division of Nephrology members and prospective donors.
Develops a communication strategy for ongoing project communications systems and for the dissemination of study findings (knowledge translation); this includes supervising the development and maintenance of a BCCHR/UBC Principal Investigator’s lab website.
Attends related conferences and meetings, of which occasional travel outside of city may be required.
Assists with research projects of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists that relate to area of technical expertise.
Hires technicians and research assistants, including conducting interviews and performance review.
Financial Oversight
Oversees and manages budgets of Principal Investigators research grants and programs
Manages financial and resource allocation in relation to laboratory budgets; participates in budget forecasting and preparing for research accounts and grant funders.
Ensures appropriate expenditures, reconciling statements, resolving discrepancies, and arranging contracts and fund transfers as needed in coordination with PHSA,BCCHRI, and external partners’ financial administrators
Supervise timely reconciliation of accounts payable and receivable for all studies and research training platform.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Accuracy, timeliness, and sound judgment are required to maximize effectiveness of the research program. The individual will need to exercise independent judgment, and feel comfortable working with a large and diverse team including research staff, physicians, nurses, allied health personnel, trainees, and secretaries.
Errors in judgment would result in a decrease in productivity of the Divisional research program, and might lead to concerns about research credibility.
Supervision Received
The incumbent works under the guidance of the Principal Investigator while also exercising significant autonomy. Supervision involves receiving strategic direction, feedback on research objectives, and guidance on navigating institutional processes. This collaborative relationship ensures alignment with organizational goals and facilitates informed decision-making in research and operational management. The role demands both independent initiative and the ability to integrate input from leadership to drive innovative advancements in cancer research and care.
Supervision Given
The individual supervises all research staff and students (graduate, co-op, flex and summer students) relating to Divisional research activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Candidates holding a graduate degree in science or health field are preferred. Experience with team/financial management is preferred. Minimum 3 years of experience in clinical research, as investigator, coordinator, administrator, or research assistant. Additional Word processing, data management, basic (or advanced) statistical skills, excellent communicator, writing skills, excellent organizational skills. Must be able to work independently, and participate and lead in a collegial manner with a clinical team. Position requires ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously, with ability to prioritize workload.
