Description
The purpose of the Library Assistant is to provide customer service to the library patrons, primarily by staffing the circulation points within the library, ensuring that students, faculty, staff, and alumni have access to the library materials they need.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Searches for, circulates and reserves library materials (i.e., books, audio, anatomical models) using the library’s automated circulation system (WMS Workflows).
- Shelves library materials and shelf reads assigned sections as necessary.
- Assists in maintaining library organization to promote a more favorable academic setting.
- Answers patron questions in-person, by phone or by chat regarding library services, resources, and general campus queries.
- Assists patrons with problems, questions or inquiries concerning library materials.
- Updates patrons’ profiles with correct addresses, phone numbers, and extended notes.
- Assists with maintaining and supplying copiers, printers, and other library equipment with the necessary supplies.
- Explains library policies and procedures.
- Participates in professional development, professional conferences and departmental committees, meetings or trainings.
- Provides assistance with Interlibrary Loan as needed and under the direction of the ILL supervisor.
- Monitors the use of the Special Collections room.
- Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- Assists patrons with the use of various library equipment in assigned area.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and/or Experience
A High School Diploma or the equivalent is required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED and 1 Year of experience in a library setting.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Able to perform duties independently with general supervision.
- Ability to work with and maintain confidential patron information.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills, listening skills, teambuilding and presentation skills.
- Demonstrate integrity and professionalism in appearance and demeanor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment and competency and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
- Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collects, compiles, compares, and prepares work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
- Ability to push and pull loaded library book carts weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds individually and up to 60 pounds with assistance.
- Work regularly includes tasks that involve retrieving and placing materials on high and low shelves, standing, walking, carrying, grasping, sitting, kneeling, climbing steps, balancing, hearing, seeing and reaching.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work performed in a general office and library environment.
- Subject to weekend, evening, and extended hours schedule assignment.
