The Department of Chemistry founded in 1965, is one of the founding departments within the Faculty of Science at Simon Fraser University. Prominent research and teaching focused department with around 27 research labs and over 35 teaching and research faculty. Our teaching is present across the Burnaby and Surrey campuses with courses running throughout the academic year. Our administrative team supports our department goals, faculty, staff, and students.
About the Role
The Assistant to the Chair and Administrative assistant role provides day to day support to the Department Chair, Manager, Academic and Administrative Services as well as departmental faculty and staff in departmental operations by ensuring timeliness and management of workflow to the Chair and department members. Acts as a key link between external, departmental members and the Chair to prioritise department needs. Supports the Manager in faculty relations which ensures that the department remains in observance of the collective agreements to prevent disputes, grievances and breakdowns between faculty and management, the hiring, promotion and tenure of department faculty members, external reviews etc. Oversees and manages core departmental events (seminar series, department meetings, interdepartmental meetings).

Qualifications
High school graduation and one year of post-secondary education or formal program equivalent, including training in word processing, database, spreadsheet, and web applications; and secretarial practices. 3 years of experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive material with discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to work with frequent interruptions and competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to follow instructions both oral and written with accuracy.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to priorise work.
- Demonstrated ability of attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise mature judgment, communicating with tact and diplomacy.
