Position Summary:
General Description
The Research Associate will investigate student accessibility, retention, and success best practices to improve program development and student outcomes in the Faculty of Education. The Research Associate will also focus on better understanding student needs from equity-deserving communities and students with accommodations, with a specific focus on high-stakes exams and other assessment activities. The Research Associate will also undertake a scoping review of current practices in the Faculty of Education and write a report on improving practice. Finally, the Research Associate will support implementation of system improvements and test their efficacy.
Primary Duties:
Research Duties
- Investigating best practices to improve equity-deserving students experiences, recruitment, retention, and success in faculties of education.
- Investigating best practices to improve students with accommodations experiences, recruitment, retention, and success in faculties of education.
- Investigate best practices to remove barriers to accommodations for high-stakes language proficiency assessments, in line with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- Preparing a report outlining recommendations for modifications to the current accommodations practices for the English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC).
- Other research duties, including analyzing results using appropriate statistical and graphical tools, as needed.
- Interpreting results, preparing reports, and presenting findings in meetings, as needed.
Program Support
- Contribute to the design and pilot implementation of research-informed models for the development and coordination of multi-section and cross-disciplinary courses, including identifying best practices in communities of practice and collaborative pedagogy.
- Support student consultation processes (e.g., surveys, focus groups, participatory methods) to inform program planning, curriculum refinement, and inclusive practices, with attention to the experiences of equity-deserving student groups.
- Review and analyze course outlines for alignment with departmental, Faculty, University, and Ministry guidelines, contributing to internal reports or recommendations that support quality assurance and curricular coherence.
- Collaborate on the development and evaluation of student and instructor orientation programs, using data and best practices in onboarding and early-term engagement.
- Research and support pilot initiatives that foster U0 student transition, engagement, and integration.
- Help develop, track, and assess scalable initiatives to strengthen instructor engagement through pre-, mid-, and post-term communications and support.
- In collaboration with ISA and Education Career Services, co-develop and support new and existing professional development events for teacher education students, including initiatives for targeted groups.
- Conduct environmental scans of promising and successful practices at comparator institutions related to program design, co-curricular supports, and academic success initiatives for diverse student populations; synthesize findings to inform DISE program and policy improvements.
EETC Duties
- Overseeing all aspects of the EETC on behalf of McGill, including:
- Acting as liaison between all McGill parties (EETC committee, Internships & Student Affairs (SA), Student Accessibility & Achievement (SAA), raters, students) and the CEETC (Centre for the English Exam for Teacher Certification)
- Working with SAA to ensure all eligible students are registered to take their exams at the SAA (and that exams are delivered to SAA, then picked up and returned to CEETC)/or if needed, proctoring exam sessions for students registered to take their exams at SAA during a separate session.
- Arranging summer exam sessions to be held at McGill computer labs (and overseeing any other McGill-based sessions if necessary) (i.e., reserving labs, communicating with McGill IT for technical requirements, etc.)
- Overseeing exam sessions jointly with CEETC representatives
- Holding information sessions for students about the EETC.
- Communicating with students and responding to any queries they may have.
- Recruiting raters (in collaboration with the CEETC) 3 times a year for the rating sessions.
- Participating in monthly meetings with the McGill EETC committee
Pilot Program
- Developing and overseeing an EETC Preparation Pilot Program
- Developing an EETC diagnostic pre-test, similar to the ones used as part of preparation for the TECFÉE.
- Piloting the diagnostic test as an optional preparation measure for students planning to take the EETC.
- Developing and instructing a 2-credit English grammar and professional writing course to be offered during the summer semester.
- Developing the existing exam preparation workshops into a 2-credit exam preparation course to be offered each semester.
- Developing and running a drop-in exam preparation tutorial service.
Experience and education:
- Ph.D. in Education or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of research experience in education.
- Experience in assessment design, administration, and invigilation.
- Instructional experience in Language Assessment in DISE.
- Strong English communication skills.
- Active research experience and independence in project planning.
- Experience in working with pre-service teachers in DISE.
- Experience providing test accommodations at SAA.
- Experience with the EETC
