The Assistant Vice President/Controller is a key member of the Finance Office and reports to the Associate Vice President of Finance. This role manages the day-to-day financial operations of the College, including accounting, financial reporting, audits, reconciliations, and internal controls. The AVP/Controller directly supervises several functional areas including accounts payable, purchasing, and the general ledger, and works closely with departments across campus to support the financial integrity and transparency of the College.
This is a hands-on leadership role that balances technical knowledge with team management, clear communication, and a strong attention to detail. The AVP/Controller also plays a central role in audit preparation, policy enforcement, and the development of key reports and external filings.
60 % of Time: Financial Operations & Reporting
Lead the annual financial statement audit and coordinate supporting work papers for external auditors, including the A-133 audit of federal programs. Support the 403(b) audit as needed.
Prepare and maintain accurate financial reports, including balance sheets and income statements.
Oversee monthly and year-end closing processes, ensuring a timely and accurate recording of transactions.
Manage monthly, quarterly, annual reconciliations of key general ledger accounts, including but not limited to: cash, accounts payable, prepaid expenses, accruals, gifts and pledges, grants, property rentals, fixed assets, debt and Title IV funds.
20 % of Time: Team Leadership and Management
Supervise the Assistant Controller and support their work on monthly, quarterly, annual general ledger reconciliations.
Oversee the Accounts Payable and Purchasing teams, including all Workday system processes.
10 % of Time: Policy Oversight and Compliance
Maintain and enforce financial policies, procedures, and internal controls across the department.
Communicate financial policies and procedures clearly to college stakeholders.
Serves on College committees as needed, including the Finance and Audit Committees.
Participate actively in the life of the College, including attending and supporting major events such as Commencement, Homecoming, and all-staff gatherings, as part of the leadership team’s shared commitment to community engagement.
10 % of Time: Annual Reports & Institutional Submissions
Oversee annual preparation and submission of IRS Forms 990, 990-T, and the Massachusetts Form PC.
Complete required reports and questionnaires, including: IPEDS, NCSE Endowment Study, economic impact surveys, CCR, and EZ audit.
Support the VP of Finance/COO and Associate VP of Finance with data and materials for Board and committee presentations.
Perform other duties to support the work of the Finance Office and the College as needed.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field.
Minimum five years of progressively responsible finance or accounting experience, in a higher education setting.
Prior experience supervising staff, including hiring, training, and supporting professional development.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines without sacrificing accuracy or quality.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently, manage sensitive information with discretion/confidentiality, and exercise sound judgment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of Word
Experience with Workday, and enterprise resource planning (ERP).
