Job Description
General Statement of Job
The Student Activities Specialist plans, develops, and carries out district-wide intramural sports activities and wellness programs to promote student engagement, well-being, retention and academic success.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
Organizes, supports, implements and evaluates district wide student activities and events, including extensive interaction with students.
Supports, implements, and evaluates district-wide activities of the Student Government Association and the Student Leadership Academy.
Organizes and implements district wide intramural sports and activities promoting the physical, mental, social and emotional well-being of students.
Implements district-wide promotion and recruitment of students to engage in student activities, student organizations, Student Government Association, Student Leadership Academy, intramural sports, orientation, and other activities.
Coordinates with College personnel to secure rooms, facilities, media, technology, maintenance, parking, security, etc. for events, as needed.
Monitors student use of facilities, furnishings and equipment at college social and recreational events to ensure proper risk management and safe practices.
Ensures collection of invoices from vendors and submits them to the appropriate staff for processing.
Prepares reports including outreach efforts and expected/actual attendance for events, as needed including individual event/program effectiveness.
Coordinate and collaborate with other departments, vendors and external agencies during events ensuring proper documentation and permits when needed.
Interacts and provides excellent customer service to students, faculty, staff, vendors, external partners and the community, in a pleasant and professional manner.
Promotes positive morale, teamwork, support, and collaboration with all staff within the Student Activities and Wellness Department as well as the rest of the college’s students, staff and faculty, consistent with South Texas College’s mission, philosophy, and goals.
Recommends and implements innovative programs and activities promoting student engagement, retention and academic success through student, staff and faculty feedback and the availability of supporting resources.
Participates in departmental meetings and in the development of departmental procedures, operations, handbooks, as well as the Institutional Effectiveness plan.
Attends and participates in on/off campus college-sponsored events with direct responsibility of assigned students including eligibility, liability and procedures.
Maintains familiarity with the department’s operating procedures as well as the College’s policies regarding student activities. Serves as Campus Security Authority.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree required or a minimum of at least four (4) years of related experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Strong computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office including, but not limited to, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, the Windows environment, and internet research skills. Excellent leadership skills.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, within stated deadlines.
Ability to work independently as well as a team player within department and with others.
Ability to adapt to constant change and periods of fast-paced, high-intensity work situations.
Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as needed.
Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with a diverse, multi-cultural student population.
Demonstrated commitment to achieving the vision and mission of South Texas College.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Checks, Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
Security Sensitive position: all applicants are subject to a criminal background check under South Texas College policy. CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, preferred.
Physical Requirements

Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to indoor and outdoor environments; large crowds; frequent public speaking; student activities and events.
Work hours frequently include evenings and weekends throughout the year depending on the schedule of student activities and events.
