Boston College is seeking a dedicated and experienced healthcare professional to serve as the Director, University Health Services (UHS). This critical leadership role ensures the delivery of high-quality healthcare services to students, employees, and the broader University community, while supporting the Jesuit Catholic mission of the institution.
The Director of University Health Services is responsible for managing all aspects of UHS operations, including clinical services, personnel, budgets, and technology. The Director plays a key leadership role in supporting the health and wellness of the campus community, providing supervision for clinical and operational staff, and ensuring compliance with healthcare standards and regulations. This position also contributes directly to patient care, offering medical services to students, faculty, and staff.
The Director collaborates closely with the AVP of the Murray Center for Student Wellness, other wellness divisions, and sports medicine to align clinical operations with divisional and institutional goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Operations and Leadership (30%)
- Oversee and participate in clinical services, including outpatient care, chronic illness management, minor injury treatment, and health education.
- Supervise UHS physicians and indirectly oversees nurse practitioners, nursing staff, and operational staff.
- Provide functional supervision for residents and medical students.
- Maintain 24/7 availability for clinical, operational, or emergent issues, including participation in the on-call schedule.
- Drive continuous improvement in clinical services by evaluating workflows, patient outcomes, and resource utilization to support efficient round-the-clock care.
Direct Patient Care (40%)
- Provide high-quality, compassionate, and responsive medical care to students and eligible campus community members, including diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for acute and chronic conditions.
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications, and develop individualized treatment plans.
- Serve as a primary care provider within the campus clinic and infirmary, maintaining an active caseload and contributing to continuity of care.
- Ensure clinical documentation is complete, timely, and compliant with professional, legal, and institutional standards (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA).
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including nursing, mental health, and wellness services to deliver integrated and holistic care.
- Support public health efforts through patient education, vaccination campaigns, and health promotion programming.
Administrative and Operational Management (20%)
- Lead the strategic and day-to-day operations of UHS, including personnel management, financial oversight, and technology integration.
- Provide oversight of staff scheduling and clinical coverage, ensuring that assignments made by the Associate Director align with institutional needs, including coordination with Sports Medicine coverage.
- Prepare, manage, and monitor an annual departmental budget, monitor expenditures, and implement corrective actions as necessary.
- Evaluate and update departmental policies, procedures, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Ensure effective oversight of 24/7 health service operations by coordinating resources, maintaining responsiveness, and promoting operational efficiency.
- Serve as an administrative liaison for interdepartmental collaboration and committees.
Standards of Care and Compliance (10%)
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and standards.
- Oversee quality assurance programs and infection-control protocols.
- Monitor patient care outcomes and implement necessary improvements.
- Maintain professional development through workshops, publications, and networking.
- Each staff member in the Division of Student Affairs is expected to support division and university-wide initiatives, staff events, and serve on committees as needed.
Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $248,320 to $310,400; salary commensurate with relevant experience.
RequirementsEducation and Licensure
- Board Certification or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, or Pediatrics.
- Licensed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine.
- Federal DEA Licensure.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years as an independent practitioner, preferably in private practice or university settings.
- Proven experience managing clinical operations and multidisciplinary teams.
- Expertise in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and healthcare technology.
- Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and communication skills.
- Familiarity with healthcare standards, quality assurance, and performance improvement initiatives.
