Assistant or Associate Professor (Teaching & Research stream), Veterinary Pharmacology
The University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) is pleased to announce the opening of two (2) full-time academic positions (Teaching and Research stream) in Veterinary Pharmacology. Depending on qualifications and career track expectations, the appointments will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
The successful candidate will be appointed in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025, or a mutually agreed upon date.
The positions require either a DVM or PhD (pharmacology/toxicology or other closely related field), or PhD (pharmacolog/toxicology or closely related field). At least one of the two positions must be filled by a DVM who is eligibile for, and intends to pursue, licensure with the ABVMA. All applicants should have an extensive research record, as demonstrated by publications and external funding. The research should indicate an interest in comparative or veterinary pharmacology/toxicology or use of animal and computer models. Expertise in veterinary clinical pharmacology/toxicology, molecular mechanisms of drug metabolism, physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modelling, or toxicology is required.
Evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Applicants must have a strong interest in contributing to DVM, undergraduate, and post-graduate teaching.
Position Requirements
Depending on qualifications and career track expectations, the appointments will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
- Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor normally requires evidence or promise of original high-quality research and scholarship and future development as a scholar. Evidence or promise of the ability to obtain funding may also be required where appropriate. Evidence or promise of teaching proficiency or professional activity may also be required.
- Appointment at the rank of Associate Professor requires evidence of an established academic program of a caliber equivalent to national recognition by peers. It is expected that a record of high-quality research and scholarship suitable to the discipline or field has been achieved. Evidence of ability to obtain funding to sustain a research program is required. Evidence of teaching effectiveness and expertise, including a demonstrated ability to teach a variety of courses, design learning experiences may be required. A satisfactory record of and active involvement in university, professional or community service is expected.
The University of Calgary has a Distributed Veterinary Teaching Hospital and clinical time is spent in clinics in the community. Clinical opportunities are wide and varied and the successful candidate will be given guidance and support in establishing relationships with local clinics, based on desires and opportunities available.
UCVM's AVMA accredited DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 50 students per year, with a planned expansion to 100 students. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs.
