Conference Accommodations within Ancillary Services is currently seeking 11 Recurring Part-time Guest Attendant - Housekeeper.
Reporting to the Manager, Housekeeping, the Guest Attendant, Housekeeping provides superior guest service and ensures the cleanliness of all aspects of UCalgary Accommodations. The incumbent will work closely with the Housekeeping Leads.
The successful candidate will be able to learn skills quickly and demonstrate high attention to detail while completing tasks and ensuring departmental standards are met. This position requires flexibility as the Guest Attendant, Housekeeping will be required to perform numerous roles and work a variety of shifts, including weekdays, evenings and weekends. This position requires moderate physical abilities as the duties include standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending, as well as lifting, carrying and pushing up to 50lbs.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Responsible for providing best practices in cleaning and customer service to Hotel Guests, Residence Students and other employees of Residence, Hotel & Conference Services.
- Provide the first line of Guest Service through cleanliness, amenities and ability to respond to Guest requests and inquiries.
- Follow all policies and procedures of the University of Calgary.
- Ensure particular attention to detail, and the highest standards for overall cleanliness are maintained.
- Comply with all accident/loss prevention programs and Health and Safety practices.
- Relay messages and respond appropriately to Guest inquiries in person, over radio and through written notes.
- Follow cleaning Standard Operating Procedures, to ensure consistency is maintained in all areas.
- Adhere to hotel grooming and dress standards.
- Minimize safety hazards by following all safety rules and procedures.
- Perform full range of cleaning duties for roles including guest rooms, laundry handling, house areas, public spaces and student spaces.
- Listen effectively, communicate with staff and guests, while maintaining a professional demeanor during stressful situations.
- Identify maintenance requirements and submits maintenance request slips as required.
- Collect and report any lost and found items, following Standard Operating Procedure.
- Maintain regular communication with the Housekeeping Supervisor and Assistant Manager, Housekeeping regarding personal performance and areas for growth and improvement.
- Participate in pre-shift briefings and staff meetings.
- Perform deep cleaning tasks within assigned areas.
- Maintain efficient and effective use of cleaning tools and resources.
- Actively participate in all departmental recycling initiatives.
- Physically fit as role includes long periods of walking, standing, bending, and carrying items.
- Maintain highest standard of professionalism, ethics, grooming and outlook towards guests, clients and team.
- Ensure regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.
- Self-directed and manage own time effectively to accomplish tasks.
- Strive to achieve departmental GSI goals, as well as other outlined team and personal goals.
- Observe and follow the established emergency Fire and Health & Safety procedures while working in a prudent and safe manner.
- Cleaning Guest rooms, including departure rooms, linen change and basic room service.
- Making beds, replacing linen, dusting, vacuuming, resetting furniture placement, and general room cleaning.
- Pick up dirty linens from floors.
- Cleaning of bathroom inside Guest room, including disinfecting all surfaces, cleaning, sinks, taps, bathtub/shower, walls, tiles, floors and toilets.
- Proper storage and handling of laundry bins.
- Removing trash and recycling from house areas, and garbage rooms.
- Restock housekeeping cart with amenities, cleaning products and linen at end of shift.
- Ensure all specified public areas are cleaned and presented within Housekeeping Standards
Tasks and Duties (Optional):
The position of Guest Attendant, Housekeeping will be responsible for a full range of cleaning duties for Hotel Alma, Global Village and Seasonal Residence. This includes the roles of Room Attendant, House Attendant, Public Spaces Attendant and Laundry Attendant.
Room Attendant:
Responsible for maintaining departmental cleaning standards in all Guest rooms including stay over (room service) and check outs rooms. As a Room Attendant the incumbent must be self motivated and able to work independently to complete 14-15 credits within an 8 hour shift. They also must uphold departmental standards, and comply with all policies and procedures.
- Cleaning glass, mirrors, wood, tile and other surfaces with approved cleaning products.
- Determining the replacement of items such as bed runner, duvet, mattress pad and shower curtain as required.
- Replacing room amenities, based on room type.
- Empty and clean garbage cans and recycling bins; Sort items into the appropriate location.
- Reporting any concerns related to maintenance, health & safety, security or other colleague or guest activity promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
- Completing maintenance request slips for any deficiencies identified in assigned rooms.
- Attend to guests requests for extra supplies or other items.
- Handle and report lost and found items.
- Ensure proper room temperature control.
- Report housekeeping items that require deeper cleaning (e.g. stains on carpets and chairs).
- Report "Do Not Disturb" Rooms and "Refuse Service" Rooms in a timely manner.
- Maintaining a clean and organized housekeeping cart throughout shift.
- Maintaining tidiness and cleanliness of janitors room.
- Cleaning of rags/microfiber clothes.
- Cleaning of mugs and glasses.
- Providing turn down and evening room service.
House Attendant:
Responsible for maintaining departmental cleaning standards in all House Spaces including hallways, stairwells, student lounges, kitchens, janitor's rooms, garbage/recycle rooms, linen and storage closets. As a House Attendant the incumbent must be self motivated and able to work independently following a task list, while responding to frequent interruptions and Guest/Colleague requests. Must uphold department standards, and comply with all policies and procedures.
- Responsible for maintaining tidiness and cleanliness of linen closet and janitor's room.
- Ensuring that linens and amenities are fully stocked in the linen and janitor closet.
- Dusting, sweeping, vacuuming house spaces.
- Cleaning all hallways and stairwells including light fixtures, baseboards, floors, door frames.
- Polishing and waxing floors in house areas.
- Operating equipment including carpet cleaner and floor waxer.
- Polishing elevator doors, elevator buttons, kick plates, door handles.
- Operating Glass cleaner to clean glasses and mugs.
- Cleaning garbage/recycling rooms.
- Assisting Room Attendants with Supplies and linen pick up.
- Cleaning Student Kitchens, hallways and common areas.
- Emptying garbage and recycling in House spaces.
- Clean and maintain vacuums.
- Restock cart/bucket with amenities and cleaning products at end of shift.
- Maintaining tidiness and cleanliness of janitors room.
- Reporting any concerns related to maintenance, health & safety, security or other colleague or guest activity promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
- Completing maintenance request slips for any deficiencies identified in assigned areas
Public Spaces Attendant:
Responsible for maintaining departmental cleaning standards in all Public Spaces including elevators, lobby, public washrooms, meeting rooms, Bistro Alma, garbage/recycle rooms, stairwells, administration areas, building entrances/exits and closets. As a Public Spaces Attendant the incumbent must be self motivated and able to work independently following a task list, while responding to frequent interruptions and Guest/Colleague requests. Must uphold department standards, and comply with all policies and procedures.
- Ensure back of house areas are cleaned and presented within Housekeeping Standards.
- Ensure all Guest spaces along the Guest's path are held to a high standard of clean (from outside front door to room and return).
- Handle Guest and staff inquiries in accordance with a high level of customer service.
- Dusting, vacuuming, resetting furniture placement, watering plants.
- Cleaning Public washrooms, stocking with supplies and monitoring throughout shift.
- Operating cleaning machines such as carpet cleaner, floor scrubber and vacuums.
- Report and follow through with items that require deeper cleaning (e.g. stains on carpets and chairs).
- Polishing and waxing floors in Public Spaces.
- Emptying garbage/recycling in Public Spaces and administration areas.
- Cleaning office space including floors, walls, desk space, windows and cupboards.
- Assisting with moving furniture, setting space.
- Collect, separate and dispose of recyclable materials.
- Maintaining a clean and organized housekeeping cart.
- Restock cart with amenities, and cleaning products at end of shift.
- Maintaining tidiness and cleanliness of janitors room.
- Reporting any concerns related to maintenance, health & safety, security or other colleague or guest activity promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
- Completing maintenance request slips for any deficiencies identified in assigned areas.
Laundry Attendant:
Responsible for maintaining departmental standards for laundry handling, including sorting, receiving, storing laundry, stocking closets, all linen spaces, and assisting with inventory. Linen spaces include the 7th floor laundry room, linen closets on all floors and linen storage rooms. As a Laundry Attendant the incumbent must be self motivated and able to work independently following a task list, while responding to frequent interruptions and Guest/Colleague requests. Must uphold department standards, and comply with all policies and procedures.
- Sort linens into appropriate bins.
- Deliver dirty linen to back door.
- Receive clean laundry.
- Sort clean laundry.
- Deliver clean laundry to linen closets.
- Proper storage and handling of laundry bins.
- Organize linen closets.
- Dust, mop, clean and organize laundry room.
- Wash microfiber clothes, and blankets require special handling.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- High School graduation diploma or equivalent work experience
- Professionalism, patience, flexibility, service etiquette skills as well as verbal and written communication skills.
- Must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, be a team player, and work independently.
- Must be proactive and standards oriented with a meticulous eye for detail.
- Highly organized, and able to prioritize tasks while ensuring the highest level of productivity is maintained.
- Must be able to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both in verbal, and written discourse.
- Previous Hotel or Housekeeping experience an asset.
- Basic mathematics knowledge is necessary.
- Guest Service oriented.
- Strong Interpersonal skills.
- Exercise good judgment and discernment.
- Understanding of and experience with cleaning products and machinery.
- Able to handle stress in a fast-paced work environment.
- Able to prioritize multiple tasks, have a sense of urgency to complete projects and be detail oriented.

Skills, Mental Demands, Physical Demands, Visual Demands:
Able to lift, pull, push, grasp and bend while lifting up to 50lbs. Repetitive motions for an extended duration of time are required. Standing: 6-8 hrs/day; sitting: 0-2 hrs/day; walking: 6-8 hrs/day; bending/reaching: 4-6 hrs/day; pushing/pulling: 2-4 hrs/day; physical effort: moderate; visual effort: moderate, detail oriented; environmental stress: high - chemical use, responding to a variety of guest calls.
