Position Summary:
The Business Development Officer is responsible for planning and execution of integrated sponsorship and marketing strategies to support McGill Athletics and Recreation operations.
Working in a fast-paced environment, the officer is responsible for stewarding, maintaining, activating and identifying new key partnerships for A&R.
The incumbent develops sponsorship plans, including defining activation approaches to leverage A&Rs marketing strategy and programs, while defining scalable and event experience solutions to support strategic priorities and deliver expected results. In this role, the person will be responsible for promoting our brand, helping to generate demand for our programming and activating all elements of our sponsorship agreements, including setup and oversight of revenue generating varsity activities.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the creation of new sponsorship assets, including the associated benefits and valuation process, in keeping with the evolution of the organization and its sponsorship properties by consistently taking inventory of current assets, staying on top of trends, and meeting with team members to assess their needs;
- In collaboration with the Senior Manager of Communications and Marketing, develop renewal strategies for long-term and emerging corporate sponsors which offer a different, and evolving, level of engagement;
- Develop solutions and proposals (including the creative approach) for each corporate sponsor and partner based on specific corporate business goals, in keeping with McGill University’s sponsorship policy and agenda;
- Develop and nurture critical partnerships and relationships and foster collaborative efforts among key partners, stakeholders and subgroups including key staff;
- Provide ongoing monthly reporting to current partners: provide detailed insight into the scope and impact of sponsorship dollars being spent, with the ultimate goal of retention and increase in year-over-year contribution;
- Develop and execute plans and programs that meet the business objectives in consultation with the varsity, recreation and McGill Sports Medicine Clinic’s stakeholder requirements as well as the sponsors and corporate partners needs and requirements;
- Develop fulfillment reports which showcase measurement (ROI) and effectiveness of the sponsorship strategy and the impacts of the investment as it relates to the business objectives;
In this role you will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:
- Engaging in partnership sales conversations and helping brands move through the pipeline process.
- Conducting in-depth research and analysis of the marketplace to identify new, emerging, and available categories across each area, with a focus on fostering opportunities for growth and collaboration.
- Developing a variety of partnership development materials, including but not limited to, creative presentations, detailed partnership proposals, overviews and summary slides.
- Supporting events and activities with a focus on creating welcoming and inclusive experiences.
- Identifying key active and established brands to help drive further conversations for prospective partners.
- Fostering strong connections by collaborating with peers, sharing industry insights, and staying updated on marketing mix opportunities.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities
- Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience. Minimum of three to five years of experience in sponsorship/partnership development, partnership marketing, sales and/or service relationships is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience working in community engagement, education or sports industry and an understanding of the culture of sport and recreation.
- Proven track record of building relationships with community, organizations and partners and demonstrated negotiation skills.
- Ability to collaborate with cross functional teams
- Proven ability to perform effectively under tight deadlines while managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
- A positive, team-first approach, incorporating integrity, confidentiality, and discretion.
- Highly motivated individual with a keen interest in partnership development and monetization of sports marketing properties.
- A self-starter with a professional demeanor and presence.
- Confident and adept at thriving in a fast-paced environment, utilizing strong time management and organizational skills.
- Skillful at listening, understanding and presenting detail
- Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as the need arises.
- Confident user of Microsoft 360 - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
- Demonstrated ability to build budgets
- Fluent in French and English
- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 on a scale of 0-4.
