The Marketing & Communications Team in the Faculty of Science is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Communications Advisor for approximately 12 months.

This position reports to the Director of Operations, and works under the direction of the Communications and Media team lead. The position will work closely with other members of the Faculty of Science Communications and Marketing team, the University of Calgary Communications Services team, the Faculty of Science Fund Development and Alumni team, and a variety of partners within the Faculty of Science, University of Calgary and Calgary community.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Create, monitor, update, and maintain the Faculty of Science's presence on social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn) in alignment with faculty and university brand guidelines.
- Use social media channels proactively to advocate for the Faculty, enhance and protect its reputation, promote events, and engage diverse audiences.
- Support the creation of analytics reports to monitor social media engagement, web traffic, and media coverage.
- Exercise discretion and independent judgment when responding to sensitive or high-visibility issues on digital platforms.
- Coordinate writing, editing, proofreading, and/or production of communication and marketing materials such as website, e-newsletters, internal communications, social media, university publications, and promotional materials.
- Collaborate with the Web Specialist/Advisor and graphic designers to develop and adapt content for both web and print.
- Contribute content for websites, print publications, podcasts, videos, and digital monitors.
- Tailor communications for internal and external audiences to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with key messages.
- Manage multiple concurrent communication projects with competing priorities, ensuring alignment with the Faculty's communication goals and deadlines.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders, faculty staff, and external vendors or creative agencies to deliver high-quality communication materials.
- Collaborate with partner communication units on media relations, including the development of news releases and strategies for media coverage.
- Provide input and feedback on communications policies and procedures to support continuous improvement.
- Ensure all communications align with and reinforce the Faculty of Science and University of Calgary brand standards and key messages.
- Act as a steward of brand and editorial guidelines, ensuring consistent voice and visual identity across platforms and materials.
- Support the creation of simple graphics and short-form videos for digital platforms using tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro.
- Collaborate on the creative development and production of multimedia assets for both internal and external communications.
- Work collaboratively within the communications team to achieve shared outcomes and resolve challenges through open discussion.
- Engage regularly with a variety of stakeholders, demonstrating diplomacy, professionalism, and strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Contribute positively to team culture, demonstrating initiative, adaptability, and a solution-oriented mindset.
- Operate effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with shifting priorities, often working independently with minimal supervision.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and propose innovative communication solutions.
- Provide support for internal and external initiatives, including events, marketing efforts and special projects.
- Make discretionary decisions that may impact programs, services, or department operations within the Faculty.
- Resolve complex and time-sensitive tasks using critical thinking and independent judgment.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Post-secondary diploma/degree in Communications, Science, or related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in Communications with a proven track record of engaging audience particularly in science - through social media and/or other forms of communication.
- At least 3 years of experience with monitoring and updating organizational social media accounts, with a strong understanding of platforms, tools and trends.
- Superior writing, editing and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail across a variety of platforms is required.
- Experience with smart phone photography and videography with basic editing is an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to remain at the forefront of current digital publishing technologies, social media trends and digital content management tools is required.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with a strong attention to detail across a variety of platforms.
- Experience using design and production software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere Pro to create social media graphics and videos is an asset.
- Communication experience with emphasis on decision-making and highly developed organizational skills.
- Proven ability to anticipate needs, plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work with little direction is required.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- The ability to handle complex, sensitive and confidential issues with professionalism and discretion is required.
- Strong team member with a collaborative mindset and ability to communicate effectively within a team.
- Experience working effectively in a post-secondary institution is an asset.
- Knowledge of the University of Calgary is preferred.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, complex environment, with constantly shifting priorities.
- Must be flexible and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, courtesy, and respect in all interactions with internal and external clients to maintain a positive image for the Faculty of Science.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Power Point is required.
- Experience working with Drupal 8 is an asset.
