Description
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Laboratory and Zebrafish Facility Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Reporting to the Principal Investigator.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Maintain zebrafish housing unit and associated equipment, including pumps, filters, tanks and water system
- Manage updates to animal protocol and be present for regular meetings with veterinary staff
- Manage quarantine facility and importation of zebrafish
- Perform primary daily care for zebrafish
- Perform breeding and other husbandry tasks
- Train students and new staff in Zebrafish husbandry, equipment maintenance and quarantine procedures
- Genotyping of mouse and zebrafish
- Ordering, shipping and receiving for research laboratories
- Molecular biology experiments (DNA and Antibody staining)
- Reconciliation of expenses
- Professional interactions with company representatives for quotations and discounts, and repair coordination
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelors degree in related subject (Biological or Health Sciences)
- 2 years experience in a research environment
- Completed animal training (i.e. IAUTP modules)
- Experience with zebrafish is an asset
- Knowledge of genetics and developmental biology is an asset
- Detail-oriented record keeping
- Demonstrated strong communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent organization skills
- Ability to problem solve in complex situations
- Knowledge of research ethics and animal care committees is desirable
- Experience with ordering systems and laboratory maintenance
