Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program - Faculty - Academic Fieldwork Coordinator Description
This position has the potential to work in a Hybrid format - remote but with intensive lab attendance at our Nashville, TN campus.
The Academic Fieldwork Coordinator (AFWC) holds a faculty appointment and has administrative, academic, service, and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the South College Entry-Level Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program. This individual demonstrates competence in fieldwork education, teaching, and curriculum development. In addition, the AFWC primary responsibilities are to plan, coordinate, facilitate, administer, and monitor activities on behalf of the academic program and in coordination with the OTD Program Director, academic faculty, and clinical faculty.
Faculty Responsibilities
- Developing, monitoring, and refining the occupational-centered fieldwork education components of the curriculum.
- Facilitating quality learning experiences for students during fieldwork education.
- Evaluating students' performance, in cooperation with other faculty, to determine their ability to integrate didactic and clinical learning experiences and to progress within the curriculum.
- Educating students, Fieldwork Educators (FWEs) and academic faculty about fieldwork education and related policies and procedures.
- Selecting clinical learning environments that demonstrate characteristics of sound patient/client management, ethical and professional behavior, safety, and current occupational therapy practice.
- Maximizing available resources for the fieldwork education program.
- Providing documented records and assessment of the fieldwork education component (includes fieldwork sites, FWEs, etc.)
- Actively engaging core faculty in the planning, implementation, and assessment processes associated with fieldwork education.
The AFWC serves as a liaison between the occupational therapy program and the clinical education site as part of his/her responsibilities. The AFWC, in cooperation with other academic faculty, establishes fieldwork education sites and facility standards, selects, and evaluates fieldwork education sites, and facilitates ongoing development, communication, and relationships with fieldwork education sites and fieldwork educators.
This graduate-level academic appointment is uniquely positioned to promote the collaboration between the healthcare academic and clinical program offerings of SC, area and nationwide healthcare systems, surrounding educational affiliation opportunities in the Knoxville, TN area and in surrounding cities and states, as well as nationwide cities and states in which OTD students reside. All graduate faculty members are expected to be active participants in the professional and community life of South College and collaborate with other academic programs where appropriate for the well-rounded education of their students. They advise and mentor graduate OTD students and contribute to a vibrant and growing academic program through participation in professional scholarly activities, committee work, curriculum planning, and development.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Communicates news and current information among all concerned stakeholders to maintain current knowledge of the educational program, the fieldwork education site, and health care changes affecting clinical practice and fieldwork education.
- Provides ongoing communication with FWEs at each fieldwork education site to support the compliance with current ACOTE Standards (referenced below).
- Communicates and oversees communication with FWEs, clinical faculty, and students to monitor progress and assess student performance. Provides guidance and support as required to problem solve and discuss pertinent issues with students and FWEs.
- Ensures all program policies, procedures, and practices under the responsibility of the Director of Clinical Education/AFWC provide for compliance with accreditation policies and procedures; specifically, ACOTE C Standards for Fieldwork Experience.
- Provides direct input into curriculum design, review, and revision processes.
Requirements
Education
- Conferred Doctorate Degree awarded from an institution that is accredited by a United States Department of Education recognized regional accrediting body.
- Preferred Degree types: OTD, PhD, or other Doctorate Degree in a closely-related field.
Licensure/Certification
- Active / Licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of Tennessee, or the state of residence.
- Initially certified by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy.
