The Faculty of Arts is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Communications and Marketing Specialist.
The Communications and Marketing Specialist reports to the Director, Communications and Marketing in the Faculty of Arts to support the strategic rollout of the faculty's communication, marketing and social media strategy and plans. This is a full-time position; 35 hours per week. The Communications and Marketing Specialist works in close collaboration with the Director, Communications and Marketing on Faculty of Arts-wide strategic initiatives.
The Communications and Marketing Specialist manages internal and external communication and marketing strategies, social media, newsletters, and digital screens updates for the Faculty of Arts.
As a well-rounded communicator, the Communications and Marketing Specialist understands communication audiences and social media culture and has rich experience in the creation and execution of social media content strategy and online community management. Connecting meaningfully and authentically with people online comes naturally to this person. The ideal candidate for this role understands the social media landscape, keeps on top of latest trends, and can execute social media plans effectively.
In supporting the Faculty of Arts communication and marketing initiatives, the Communications and Marketing Specialist contributes to maintaining and enhancing the website for the faculty's academic departments and units.
This position ensures Faculty of Arts communications, social media, digital and web content aligns with UCalgary and Faculty of Arts brand standards and writing style. They work collaboratively with university resources to ensure that communication and marketing initiatives are strategic, on brand and consistent with overall Faculty of Arts strategic priorities.
The Communications and Marketing Specialist views the departments and units within the Faculty of Arts as a large communication ¿newsbeat¿. The ideal candidate for this position is listening and looking for compelling stories to amplify and celebrate the diversity of research and thought, and to spot and develop stories about faculty research and student success.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Write/edit/re-write content for Faculty of Arts website, including assessing the content of department and unit websites/webpages and working with unit stakeholders and content experts to gather and edit required content.
- Upload new web content including text, images, and video.
- Create appropriate visual assets for web pages including web banners, resizing photos for website.
- Develop and manage content for Faculty of Arts newsletter, Arts Engage
- Develop and implement effective social plans and content for the Faculty of Arts social media channels, including intake and prioritization of requests from departments within the faculty who require social media support.
- Develop and create engaging content, written and visual, for Faculty of Arts social media channels.
- Develop and write quality and timely communication and marketing materials website and social media.
- Maintain and update Faculty of Arts digital screens in a timely manner.
- Contribute to development and implementation of internal/external communication and marketing strategies to support Faculty of Arts initiatives.
- Proactively seek out faculty research stories and student success stories and develops them to share with internal and external audiences through newsletter, website, and social media channels
- Provide analysis as necessary to support timely data-driven decision-making including crisis communications and issues management.
- Monitor competitor activity on social media; keep abreast of market changes and the marketing mix used by competitors.
- Support team members with other day-to-day team tasks and coordinating projects and activities as required.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree, diploma or recognized credential in marketing, communications, public relations, digital media, information design or a related field; a combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 3-4 years experience in the communications field, particularly around strategic communications planning, and implementation.
- Minimum 3- 4 years experience in social media operations with a strong focus on channels such as ¿ but not limited to ¿ Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube.
- Proven experience in using social media dashboards such as Sprout or Hootsuite to monitor online activity, create reports and provide data to inform communications and marketing strategy.
- Strong experience in writing and producing engaging content for newsletters, websites, and social media.
- Experience using website content management systems with experience in Drupal an asset
- Experience with design and layout tools such as Adobe CS (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) to resize photos, create website banners, and develop social media assets.
- Proven ability and desire to learn new systems, processes, and technologies.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple complex tasks and competing priorities, to meet short deadlines, and maintain the highest standards of quality and attention to detail.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with others both on and off campus
- Self-directed with excellent English communications skills, both written and verbal. Strong understanding of the use of communications iconography in the social environment.
- Well organized, with a demonstrated ability to prioritize functions on a daily basis and capable of simultaneously managing multiple responsibilities efficiently and effectively.
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office and the ability to acquire a high-level of understanding of the university business systems.
- Detailed-oriented with a methodical approach to system, process, and data management.
