The Student Wellness Hub provides a range of health services to McGill students with a focus on awareness, prevention, and early intervention for both the Macdonald and downtown campuses. The Student Wellness Hub has a variety of clinicians that provide one-on-one appointments, therapy groups and other services. Within the Student Wellness Hub, the Healthy Living Annex focuses on health promotion and offers peer support programs.
Position Summary:
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, provides nursing care, counselling, and assists physician. Organizes and participates in campaigns, educational programs and other activities related to illness prevention and health. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Collaborates in research projects. Acts as resource person on health related matters.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assesses care needs of students presenting to the clinic. Establishes clinical priorities and enacts the appropriate course of action, including liaison and referral to medical staff and other health-care within the institution and community at large. Ensures adjustment, coordination and follow up of such services. Promotes student wellness with collaborative, patient-centered approach to health and wellbeing. Empowers students to monitor and maintain their health.
- Performs a preliminary mental health and/or physical health examination of persons that present to the Student Wellness Hub, by evaluating, treating and/or referring students to appropriate resources in the same day through an appointment at the clinic and/or to external resources (e.g. CLSC, ER, walk-in clinics).
- Assesses student’s medical priority and condition (i.e., urgent, semi-urgent, non-urgent); provides support for health issues. Monitors and records vital signs, performs blood draws, health assessments, collects relevant data and documents in the patient chart.
- Acts as a resource person for physical and mental health related matters. Implements referrals to dieticians, doctors, therapists, Wellness Advisors, Access Advisors, Dean of Students, OSVRSE, SAA, and other university resources. Participates in a collaborative care model at McGill.
- Meets one-on-one with students with mental health concerns for initial evaluation and follow up as needed. Assesses and intervenes with students in mental health crisis; performs risk assessments, makes referrals, as appropriate and required. Identifies crises and initiates the Crisis Management Protocol. Collaborates with students to establish wellness goals and create safety plans. Provides support and resources to students experiencing abuse, discrimination and harassment.
- Responds to and assesses emergency situations and applies appropriate measures. Uses excellent clinical judgment and applies collective orders. Monitors students experiencing urgent issues such as severe allergic reaction and acute chest pain and alerts the physician. Performs EKGs based on medical order. Administers cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and operates an AED (defibrillator). Contacts emergency services and refers patients to the emergency room when necessary. Prepares student for urgent transportation to hospital. Monitors student’s health status while awaiting transportation.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- Must be licensed, in good standing, with the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ); possess a prescribing license (or eligible to obtain one).
- Demonstrates ease and understanding of the Protocole d’immunisation du Québec (PIQ).
- Experience in de-escalating high-risk / crisis situations, strongly preferred.
- Experience in a clinic environment with proven experience performing triage in a fast-paced clinic setting.
- Experience navigating mental health resources within the private and public health care systems, is a strong asset.
- Must be customer focused and service oriented, which includes but is not limited to being approachable, responsive, attentive and helpful.
- Proven discretion in dealing with confidential and/or sensitive information or situations. Assists all clients with a positive attitude, tact and diplomacy while maintaining a professional manner and competence at all times.
- Demonstrates ability to explain protocols to patients and obtain informed consent.

Hourly Salary: MUNACA Level J - $39.25 - $48.65
