Student Wellness Hub
The Student Wellness Hub provides a range of health services to McGill students with a focus on awareness, prevention, and early intervention. The Student Wellness Hub has a variety of clinicians that provide one-on-one appointments, therapy groups and other services. The incumbent will be working in-person at both the Downtown campus and Macdonald Campus regularly.
POSITION CONTEXT
Supervised by the Associate Director and with oversight of the Medical Director of Hub Services, the Nurse Practitioner is an autonomous health professional providing an integrated model of care. They blend in-depth knowledge with the legal and health authority and have autonomy to order and interpret diagnostic tests, form diagnostic impressions, prescribe medications and perform procedures. They demonstrate leadership and initiate change to improve patient, organization and system outcomes. They initiate and/or participate in the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs to meet patients’ needs. They supervise and evaluate Nurse Practitioner trainees on both campuses.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide medical leadership at both the Downtown and Macdonald Campus Clinics. Develop initiatives to promote health and wellness through clinical care, program development, health promotion activities, etc. Represent the Student Wellness Hub on campus in various settings (e.g. new student orientation).
- Perform comprehensive physical examinations and assessments, order and interpret necessary tests, and perform procedures on a student population in a drop-in and pre-booked appointment clinic setting.
- Manage stable chronic illnesses (e.g. asthma, mental health), administer age-appropriate screening tests (including pap smears and STI testing) within a student population.
- Collaborate remotely with physicians to manage cases.
- Serve as a health care resource and promote wellness through individual health teachings with the student population. Focus on building students’ understanding of their health and encourage healthy lifestyle habits.
- Have a sensitivity towards students’ mental health, and as needed, provide mental health support, crisis management care, and guidance towards resources within the McGill community.
OTHER QUALIFYING SKILLS AND/OR ABILITIES
- Must possess a Master’s Degree with a Certificate in Primary Care.
- Must be licensed with the O.I.I.Q. (Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec) as a Nurse Practitioner.
- Member of A.I.P.S.Q. (association des Infirmières Practiciennes Spécialisées du Québec), an asset.
- Must possess experience in a clinic environment and knowledge of university policies and procedures.
- Must be approachable and composed under pressure.
- Must be self-directed and able to work autonomously and as member of a team in a fast-paced, changing and deadline-oriented environment.
- Time management skills, organizational skills with a proven ability to simultaneously work on multiple projects within specific deadlines with superior attention to detail.
- Must have a client-service orientation with a proven ability to receive, retain and clearly transmit information related to health matters.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to deal with highly sensitive and confidential situations.
- Proven ability using a variety of medical equipment and instruments.
- Demonstrated ability in a PC environment using MS Office, customized scheduling software, internet search engines and email.
- Fluent in both English & French, spoken and written.
- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day-to-day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 4 (Fluent) on a scale of 0-4.
