The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Assistant position. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
The Research Coordinator position supports the logistical functions of our research lab, specifically around duties associated with the successful implementation of our tri-counsel grant. Logistical functions include keeping a calendar of project deadlines and timelines, submitting reimbursements, scheduling meetings and data collection sessions (e.g., interviews), hiring student research assistants, paying research participants, purchasing lab supplies, coordinating activities (e.g., rooms, permissions), and corresponding on behalf of the lab and principal investigator.
This position reports directly to Dr. Adam Murry, the Principal Investigator (P.I.) of the Indigenous Organizations' and Communities' Development Research Lab.
The primary purpose of the position is to support the implementation of research (e.g., coordinating meetings with project teams and sub-teams, setting up interviews/focus groups, keeping a calendar, support for REB submissions), the management of our research lab's human resources (e.g., arranging student stipends, interviewing and surveying research volunteers, tracking student progress and accountability), and the coordination of lab-related activities (e.g., coordinating lab meetings, purchasing equipment, printing materials, communicating with journals and professional networks). New federal funding (SSHRC) is making this position possible, and its aim to reduce the amount of hours required of the PI for clerical, logistical, and administrative tasks.
The individual hired for this position will work closely with the P.I. and lab stakeholders, track timelines and deadlines, communicate with lab members, communicate with external parties (e.g., other P.I.'s; university staff), and provide support for purchases, reimbursements, scheduling, and coordination.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Meet regularly with PI to discuss options and decisions related to project management.
- Organizing responsibilities, tasks, and human resources per project associated with the Indigenous Organizations' and Communities' Development Research lab.
- Set up shareable One-Drive folders/sub-folders for PI and respective team resources access.
- Create a calendar with project timelines and deadlines, highlighting deliverables (e.g., publications, presentations, community and evaluation reports, public dissemination), budget end-dates, project activities and the lab members responsible.
- Utilize technology to assist in project management (e.g., Notion).
- Set up email for our lab, send and respond to emails associated with project activities.
- Acquire delegation abilities within UofC's portal to assist with lab-related reimbursements, approvals, payments, and purchases.
- Monitor lab members progress on each project and project parts.
- Schedule interviews and assist in the hiring of undergraduate research assistants.
- Schedule interviews and assist in the selection of undergraduate research volunteers.
- Maintain a lab budget that keeps track of spending across multiple grants.
- Maintain lab website, updating membership and outputs of its members (e.g., publications/presentations/grants/scholarships).
- Schedule meetings with collaborators, team members, university staff and admin, and other stakeholders.
- Produced reports on project progress, evaluation and needs assessments.
- Our lab prides itself on prioritizing relationships throughout its processes. As such, this requires the research coordinator to maintain an ethos of respect, patience, understanding, and flexibility when working with our stakeholders inside and outside of the university.
- Recruitment, introductions, emails, and other interactions are to be written or spoken in ways that are friendly, inviting, and accessible to wide audiences.
- Cancellations, extensions, and augmentations to plans are to be accommodated, when possible, with understanding, respect, and patience.

- In instances where grant accountability requires reports pertaining to project implementation, the research coordinator will assist in pulling data related to number of meetings we held, events held, number of attendees, data collection events, grants, publications, presentations, students mentored, dollars spent, and goals accomplished.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Project management skills.
- College level reading and writing ability.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Excel, One-Drive, Sharepoint, Word, Powerpoint).
- Experience collecting data, tracking, measuring, and reporting outcomes is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal skills and verbal communication ability.
- Experience working with research and researchers, particularly research involving Indigenous topics and populations.
- Coursework or training about ethics and practice working with Indigenous Peoples.
- Ability to balance multiple responsibilities across multiple projects.
- Ability to build positive relationships with colleagues and other stakeholders.
- Experience with Human Resource Information Systems is an asset.
- Willingness to learn and adapt with changing environments.
- Ability to organize tasks and activities for multiple projects with different aims.
- Ability to track budgets, spending, reimbursements, and payment regiments.
