Job DescriptionAssistant Director, Career Education – Government, Law, Public Policy & Pre-law Advisor
The Assistant Director at the Boston College Career Center plays a vital role in supporting the Center’s mission to empower students to incorporate their career goals into a life of meaning and impact. Guided by the Career Center’s Explore, Prepare, Act model and rooted in the values of a Jesuit liberal arts education, the Assistant Director encourages students to discern their gifts and talents and apply them in ways that make a positive impact, regardless of their background.
The Career Education team within the Career Center supports students and recent alumni around seven common career paths and a range of programmatic initiatives. This position will focus on supporting students interested in Government, Law, and Public Policy and serves as the university’s Pre-Law Advisor. This role is responsible for one-on-one career coaching, career programming, networking events, other related educational events and employer engagement. This position will also supervise a Graduate Assistant. The Assistant Director must be extremely relatable to students, a strong relationship builder (with stakeholders including alumni, employers and faculty), adept at event management and adaptable to changing trends in student interests, and market trends. Individual and Group Career Coaching
- Serve as an industry expert for a designated career cluster, staying up-to-date on recruiting practices, hiring timelines, and industry trends
- Serve as Boston College’s Pre-law Advisor for students and alum who are applying to law school by providing one-on-one advising and presenting a variety of workshops on pre-law career-related topics for undergraduates such as law school planning and personal statements.
- Provide one-on-one and group career coaching to undergraduates, graduate students, and recent alumni on career-specific information to help them explore their career interests and prepare for and conduct a job, internship, or graduate school search; topics include industry exploration, search strategies, preparation of application materials, interview preparation, and salary negotiation
- Create and update educational materials on a range of career topics, including web content and worksheets
- Adapt coaching style to the unique backgrounds and identities of Boston College students
- Maintain proficiency with online tools, resources, and career coaching methods to continuously improve services to students
- Support the overall work of the Boston College Career Center by providing career coaching to all students during drop-ins and during peak times in the academic year
Programming, Strategy, Relationship Management & Engagement
- Develop and implement a plan to address the needs of students interested in pursuing careers in Government, Law, and Public Policy. This plan takes market trends and student usage trends into consideration
- Communicate and coordinate with law schools who are looking to recruit Boston College students
- Create and present career development related programming on a variety of career topics in different formats
- Build relationships and maintain regular contact with relevant campus partners in Student Affairs, Mission and Ministry, Academic Affairs, and student organizations. For example, the person in this role may collaborate closely with Graduate Student Life and academic graduate program directors to determine how best to meet the needs of BC’s graduate student population
- In close collaboration with Employer Engagement colleagues, maintain relationships with alumni and employers to engage them in on-campus programs and learn from them about trends in their industry
- Review and recommend appropriate career resources and web content for students seeking jobs, internships, or graduate school related to government, law, and public policy
- Conduct assessment and evaluation to support programmatic development and outcomes
- Maintain comprehensive records on engagement with students and employers
Cross-Functional Teams and University Initiatives
- Serve on various cross-functional teams to promote the vision and direction of the Career Center; support the overall work of the Career Center team’s strategic priorities and major events and programs, such as career fairs and Endeavor
- Lead a team in implementing one or more Career Center team-wide programs or initiatives
- Contribute to the Career Center’s strategic planning process in order to evolve Career Center services and programs
- Represent Boston College and the Career Center in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with industry standards and changes; revise programs to reflect trends and increase the center’s visibility of professionals in the field
- Represent the Career Center on divisional or university committees

Title and salary commensurate with relevant experience based on the following hiring ranges:
0-3 years of experience: $65,550 - $81,950
3+ years of experience: $72,450 - $90,550
Requirements- Bachelor’s degree required; relevant Master’s degree preferred
- Minimum of 1-3 years of previous experience coaching students on career issues or working in a relevant field is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to working with and supporting and supporting all of our students
- Ability to design, deliver, and present to students and colleagues at workshops and special events
- Experience in developing and implementing complex career-related programming and program management.
- Excellent communication (oral, written, and presentation) and organizational skills.
- Collaborative and team-orientation working styles and a demonstrated ability to effectively build and manage relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others.
- Willingness to conduct program assessment, look critically at results, and use findings to improve Career Center services and resources
- Understanding of and / or strong desire to understand career services trends and a commitment to staying abreast of shifts in the field
- Ability to adapt and change with organizational needs
- Demonstrated comfort with learning and using technology, including new and unfamiliar platforms.
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed
- The position offers a limited flexible and hybrid work schedule that suits the Career Center’s business needs. As a student-facing role, this position requires the staff member to primarily be in person and on campus.
