The Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Facilities Maintenance Electrician.
Operations and Maintenance (O&M) department, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost-effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities. Campus is divided into 6 operating zones.
This position reports to the Supervisor, Maintenance. Work is performed under minimal supervision.
This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday to Friday, however, transfer to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. Overtime may be required and the incumbent might be expected to be on stand by. Callouts to the campus can be expected during emergencies.
The Electrician is responsible to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of all electrical power and lighting systems. May be required to assist the UofC Electrical Utilities and Distribution Team with the operations and maintenance of the Campus wide electrical distribution system. This includes a continuous high volume of work with certain peak periods, imposing high physical and mental demands. Problems encountered are from moderate to high complexity due to a vast scope of equipment and systems to be maintained, as well as a wide range of system variety from antiquated, obsolete equipment, up to the newest high tech electrical processes. The diverse workload involves operational deadlines, shifting priorities, and simultaneous organization, all of which can impact the performance of each facility or group of facilities.
This position requires work be carried out with the following conditions: within confined spaces, scaffolds, and lifts of heights up to 4 metres, heavy lifting up to and including 25 kilograms that may require performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities and controlled hazardous environments.
Primary Purpose of the Position:
- Completing assigned installations, alterations, maintenance, and repairs to a broad range of electrical equipment and systems, as well as carrying out operational functions.
- Performing work in compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code (current legislated edition), University of Calgary standards, policies, and procedures, and any applicable building codes.
- Communication with the customer, contractor, manufacturer, supplier, and technical support, and other trade staff in order to successfully complete task.
- Exploring all options and innovative solutions required to ensure minimum electrical interruptions of building systems and equipment.
- Maintaining records, as-built blueprints, and schematic diagrams when altering any existing or new systems.
- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.
- Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish your work.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.
- Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of new trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University.
- Ensures that equipment, workspaces, and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order.
- Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
- Provides customer service to internal according to university and departmental standards and expectations by pleasantly and respectfully interacting with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community as well as evaluating customer satisfaction.
- Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.
- Discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail are required attributes.
- Is willing to learn and adapt to change and is expected to actively participate in own training and development in coordination with the department.
- Meets all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures and OHS Legislation as required ensuring personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations.
- Is familiar with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" and conducts himself/herself according to these principles in all situations when acting on behalf of the University of Calgary.
- Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.
- Ensures that personal hygiene, attire and grooming are appropriate for the work environment.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Provincial or interprovincial Electrical Trade Certification with 3-5 years of experience.
- Must be familiar with recognized practices, techniques, tools, test equipment, instrumentation, and safety procedures associated with the electrical trade.
- Must have experience in commercial, industrial and institutional electrical applications with a good understanding of the current Canadian Electrical Code.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, shop drawings, specifications, and maintenance manuals is required.
- Must have knowledge in the installation, maintenance, and operation of the following systems: 120/208, 277/480, 347/600 volt power distribution; incandescent, fluorescent, and high intensity discharge lighting and control; standby generators; battery banks; U.P.S. emergency power systems; motor and motor control; heating and cooling control; variable frequency drives and soft start motor starters; troubleshooting, repair, and retrofitting of electrical systems. -Experience in any of the following areas would be an asset: 2,300 volt up to 13,200 volt power distribution; electrical project coordination from inception to completion within specific time frames; design, estimating, as built and record keeping; harmonic distortion, power quality monitoring and mitigation methods; power metering.
- Must be able to work on ladders at various heights, work in confined spaces, in all weather conditions.
- Must be able and willing to work in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, research laboratories including areas that support animals, mechanical rooms, service tunnels etc.
- Must have good hearing and color vision and be able to perform physically demanding work in all types of weather conditions.
- Must be able to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Must have the ability to work with others in a team environment including mentoring and sharing knowledge with apprentices and co-workers.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision to complete tasks assigned in a timely manner.
- Must have a proven record of upgrading and updating applicable trade skills and staying current with industry trends.
- Must have proven record of providing superior customer service including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Must be able to listen to and understand information and ideas presented and have ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand.
- Must be able to manage own time effectively.
- Must be able to use Microsoft office suite including word, e-mail, mobile communication devices, such as iPhone, Smartphone etc.
- A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
