Call for Proposals: Archival Residency Project (ARP)
We invite a current UCalgary undergraduate or graduate student into the University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections (ASC) as an artist/researcher-in-residence, to navigate, reflect, and respond to materials from the Edith Fowke fonds in a format of the student¿s choosing (including but not limited to: written work, artwork, website, sound piece, data mapping, educational resource, multimedia).
Although the focus of the residency is connected to the Fowke materials, ASC holds over 12 km of archival materials, and over 230,000 rare and special book materials that would be available to the researcher for supplementary material or supporting research. This project is supported by a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning grant from the Taylor Institute and will take a collaborative co-research approach: the student will be guiding the focus and outcome of research while contributing to and reflecting on their learning, research, and creative process with the LCR research team, David Jones (Music Archivist), and Lelland Reed (Director, Access Services) to explore the potentials for transdisciplinary research and pedagogy at UCalgary Archives and Special collections. The student can expect initial onboarding to UCalgary¿s archives and navigating archival research, in addition to ongoing support from the research team. The student is expected to produce a final research outcome and are encouraged to engage in a public-facing dissemination component such as a workshop, screening, or artist talk.

Context
The Edith Fowke fonds (https://searcharchives.ucalgary.ca/edith-fowke-fonds is part of the Richard Johnston Canadian Music Archives Collection, containing the records of prominent Canadian musicians and composers. Fowke¿s archive contains a wide variety of materials including textual materials, photographs, cassette and open reel tapes, dating between 1936 and 1996, representing many aspects of her career as a folklorist, writer, collector, and educator. Material includes manuscripts, radio scripts, personal and professional correspondence, audio recordings of music and CBC radio programs, articles related to her publishing and research, among other materials.
Her work has had a significant impact in the study of Canadian folk music and is also relevant to recent reflections on ethics around ethnomusicology practices. As Emily Hansell Clark describes in Audibilities of Colonialism and Extractivism, this reconsideration aims to identify ¿[embedded histories of relation] through deep explorations of colonial inequalities, extractivist epistemologies, and the forms of relation that different histories of listening make audible.¿ (World of Music 10, no. 2 (2021): 5¿2). Applicants are encouraged to take a personal pathway through the selection of materials and focus of research, informed by creative practice, academic discipline, or personal interest.
