The Recruitment Team in the Office of the Registrar is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Student Recruitment Specialist.
The University of Calgary Student Recruitment Team is committed to attracting top quality candidates to the institution by utilizing creative and compassionate methods to meet, listen to, inform, and advocate for prospective students from diverse backgrounds. Working within institutional strategies and policies, the student recruitment team is the first point of contact to provide clear advice about how to choose, apply for, accept, and enhance best-fit academic programs, as well as empowering inadmissible applicants to identify suitable academic pathways to actualize their goals.
Reporting to the Coordinator, National Recruitment and working closely with the Student Recruitment Assistant, Indigenous, the Student Recruitment Specialist, Indigenous, is responsible for recruitment of students to the University of Calgary, with a focus on Indigenous students. The Student Recruitment Specialist, Indigenous provides information about UCalgary programs and admission pathways to support students locally and nationally at high schools, adult learning centers, First Nations Colleges and other venues. This includes the implementation, delivery, and evaluation of Indigenous student recruitment activities and communication.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Organizes, implements, and conducts varied on- and off-campus or online informational/promotional sessions for prospective applicants.
- This role specifically focuses on the recruitment and support of Indigenous students.
- Plans and targets defined recruitment and outreach activities with Indigenous students, including connecting and building strong relationships with Indigenous communities, First Nations colleges, high schools and adult learning programs in Canada.
- Responsible for providing up-to-date, accurate information about the University and its programs to actively promote and market those programs to prospective applicants.
- Provides advisement to prospective students and their families on the admissions requirements, Indigenous pathways and processes.
- Works with the other members of the Recruitment and Admissions team, the Writing Symbols Lodge and other university units to identify innovative ways of bringing information to Indigenous stakeholders in an efficient and effective manner.
- Build institutional capacity and culture to recruit Indigenous students.
- Provides pre-screening of application credentials to facilitate the application and admission process along with referrals to other relevant areas.
- Supports and is responsible for responding to e-mail and having student meetings to answer prospective student, parent, counsellor Indigenous community questions.
- Provides support to other regions and groups as identified by the Coordinator, National Recruitment and Assistant Registrar, Student Recruitment and Applicant Relations.
- Works within a pre-established budget and framework to promote and execute prospective student recruitment activities (in-person and online) with measurable objectives.
- Ensure recruitment activities have a commitment to Indigenous students through outreach and participation.
- Supports and provides recommendations for the creation of promotional materials and a communication plan in conjunction with the Writing Symbols Lodge, Admissions and Student and Enrolment Services Marketing & Communication Team.
- Works closely with many previously defined internal and external stakeholders to support all aspects of recruitment activities.
- Supports the communication plan in preparation for all recruitment activities including invitations, reminder messages, and follow-up surveys making adaptations and adjustments to meet the needs of Indigenous applicants and students.
- Works closely with the broader UCalgary community to collaboratively engage stakeholders on and off campus to organize, train, and educate participants to successfully deliver UCalgary activities.
- Monitors e-mail, completes call campaigns and connects with prospective students through one on one meetings to provide support with recruitment activities or queries from the external community.
- Acts as a support for questions and troubleshooting for students and other participants and escalates concerns to the Assistant Registrar, Student Recruitment or designate as required.
- Providing support for Indigenous Campus tours as well as the campus tours program to deliver prospective student campus tours.
- Detailed Knowledge of the University of Calgary's programs, Indigenous supports, services, enrolment policies and procedures to support queries from guests and ensuring the information is up-to-date.
- Be informed on strategies/promising practices that have been successful in promoting post-secondary education within Indigenous communities including resources and initiatives.
- Understand and support unique educational needs of Indigenous students.
- Conducts analyses of effectiveness of various recruiting initiatives as related to Indigenous recruiting.
- Assisting with ensuring recruitment trips and events, counsellor databases, and inventory are entered into the CRM.
- Assisting with the preparing and the distribution of recruitment materials.
- Acts as a resource to other units within of the Office of the Registrar.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Requires an undergraduate degree from a recognized/accredited university. A degree from the University of Calgary is preferred.
- Prior experience working in a university environment is preferred.
- Demonstrated familiarity with Indigenous communities, history, and culture.
- Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with Indigenous Peoples and alongside Indigenous communities including Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers.
- Demonstrated understanding of the cultural knowledge and communication skills required to connect with Indigenous students, schools and communities.
- Strong affiliation with Indigenous communities across Western Canada, and extensive knowledge on indigenous cultures.
- Knowledge of current issues and best practices in the Canadian context for Indigenous education and support services for Indigenous students.
- Advising skills, preferably in an educational setting and/ or with regional Indigenous people/communities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Treaty 7 territory and/or an established working relationship with Treaty 7 communities are considered an asset.
- Previous undergraduate recruitment or admission experience is considered an asset.
- Strong scheduling, organizational, and time management skills.
- Ability to manage change and demonstrate success in leading change initiatives.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent writing, public speaking, and presentation skills; demonstrated abilities in project management; and strength in answering multiple complex enquiries per day.
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse groups of people.
- Demonstrated intercultural competency.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, colleagues, school administrators, officials and representatives.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, high pressure, team-based environment and meet deadlines.
- Strong computer skills including demonstrates proficiency with Microsoft Office products are required to produce plans, reports, text, and materials.
- Knowledge of PeopleSoft would be an asset.
- Willing to work evenings and weekends as required and work independently with minimal supervision.
- A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
