Description
The Dean's Office in the Faculty of Law invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 30 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
This position reports to the Lead Principal Investigators and will work directly on the project, Protecting Democracy from Cyber Threats, and provide technical advice and assistance to the project researchers in respect of their project activities and completion of deliverables in accordance with the project requirements. This position provides technical expertise to the project, makes independent decisions that can be defended, and applies excellent communication skills to work collaboratively with researchers to further the project goals. This requires working closely with researchers and staff.
This position works Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week, with occasional travel and evening or weekend work to meet project deadlines
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Assist project researchers with their research, scholarship, concept development, and other project activities, such as searching and sourcing data, developing bibliographies, drafting research memos, developing patent landscapes, citation formatting, reference-checking, and editing works.
- Project data collection, data management, and intellectual property management.
- Design and manage a project website, including the creation of website content.Plan, organize, schedule, and implement research meetings, workshops, and external engagement.
- Participate in research meetings and research workshops.
- Take workshop and meeting minutes, and develop, write and present workshop and meeting reports.
- Assist Lead Principal Investigators to coordinate research and project activities done by project researchers.
- Liaise with staff on project issues
- Attend relevant training and information sessions.
- Identify areas for project improvement and develop and report suggestions for improvements on a regular basis.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Bachelors (or equivalent, e.g., JD) degree in a relevant field (e.g., law, politics, security studies, public policy) is required.
- A graduate degree in a relevant field is preferred.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity technology, law and policy, election law and politics, and democratic institutions is an asset.
- Ability to provide research support to members of the research team and to understand the impact of their work.
- Experience in providing research support is an asset.
- Exceptional organizational, problem solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Ability to use excellent judgement, to take initiative, to be thoughtful, and creative, to work independently, organize and complete work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to keep confidences.
- Excellent English academic writing and verbal communication skills, including demonstrated proficiency in effectively communicating ideas.
- Experience creating and managing a website is an asset.
- Ability to develop collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently, be able to multitask, high attention to detail, and meet deadlines in an academic environment.
- Familiarity with the University of Calgary and its organizational environment is an asset.
- Strong organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including solid working experience using relevant technology such as Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat), and the Internet, are required.
- Experience with Peoplesoft is a strong asset.
- Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to seamlessly perform and prioritize multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail.
- Proficient digital and physical database management skills for collecting, maintaining and organizing information data.
- Ability to maintain a professional, diplomatic, and respectful demeanor and positive attitude.
